ING Unsung Heroes Award

Each year, K-12 educators submit applications for an ING Unsung Heroes grant by describing projects that utilize new teaching methods and techniques that improve learning. Each project is judged on its:

  • innovative method
  • creativity
  • ability to positively influence students

The deadline is April 30, 2009.

One hundred finalists will be selected to receive a $2,000 grant, payable to both the winning teacher and his or her school. At least one grant is awarded in each of the 50 states, provided that at least one qualified application was received from each state. Three are selected for additional financial awards of $25,000, $10,000 and $5,000.

Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation-AAPD Congressional Internship Program

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is accepting applications for a congressional internship program for college students (juniors and seniors) with disabilities.

Students will work on Capitol Hill in congressional offices for eight (8) weeks and acquire valuable experience in congressional office operations, public policy development, and constituents' roles in the legislative and political processes. The internship program, administered by AAPD, was created in 2002 through a grant from Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation.

Students will receive free housing, a stipend, and round trip airfare to Washington D.C. They will work with a congressional staff member on a significant policy issue.

Applications are due January 9, 2009.

Microsoft-AAPD Federal Information Technology Internship Program

The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is accepting applications for a summer internship program, funded by Microsoft. The program is designed for college and university students with disabilities interested in careers in information technology. Students must have completed at least one semester of college at either the associates or bachelor's degree level.

Ten (10) students with disabilities will work as interns for eleven (11) weeks at a federal agency in Washington, D.C. They will work for important federal agencies, such as the National Science Foundation and Federal Aviation Administration. The program will give students a chance to gain work experience in information technology and public service.

Student will receive free housing, a stipend of $1,500.00, and round trip airfare to Washington D.C.

Applications are due January 9, 2009.

LD OnLine Internship

We are seeking a capable intern who has a friendly spirit and does careful work. We can provide HTML training and exposure to a fast-paced innovative web environment. The site needs a lot of work in terms of editorial production. Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing articles and organizing them into categories
  • Making recommendations as to which articles will go on the web
  • Copy editing material for punctuation and grammar
  • Update HTML code on pages. Standard tags will be given
  • Implement stylesheet and troubleshoot pages to make sure they all display properly
  • Clean up pages and test to make sure all links are working properly
