Teaching tolerance

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I work with students with many behavioral problems. I am also going to school to be a special educator. I was curious if anyone could give me any input on how to motivate a child who will participate in the first half of class, but then somewhere along the line, he starts throwing tantrums, and doesn’t want to do anything except play games or something. How do I handle this child? Any techniques or websites that anyone can offer to me? Thanks…Sarah

The child is telling you he can’t work for as long as the period is. How old is this student?

If he’s working well and staying on task for the first half of a class, that might be all he can do for now. Attention spans run short and frustration levels run high.

Playing a learning game with him or having a learning game he can play by himself might be the ideal thing for him when his attention span gives out but he’s still able to play games. Make the games learning games. Almost any game involves critical thinking skills.
