Hi! I am an elementary education major and I am working on making a presentation for my class about learning disablities. I remember in one of my classes in middle school a teacher did a unit on learning disablities. She had some very good activites that helped us as a class see what it is like to have a learning disablity. I was wondering if anyone knows what type of thing I am talking about and any ideas where I could find good examples. Thanks, Laura
Re: Learning Disablities Presentation
Look for Richard Lavoie’s video “Fat City”. I have even seen copies for rent in our local public library.
Re: Learning Disablities Presentation
I would try giving students text which has been scrambled or words in the text changed to look like some other word. You could also have them write with their nondominant hand. Have them try doing something that requires a lot of focus with lots of background noise, you giving them incomplete information, etc. Good luck.
Re: Learning Disabilities Presentation
I *still* remember some of the activities we did in middle school during disability awareness week. One was a taped listening excercise, in which you were supposed to follow the teacher’s instructions and connect the dots to form a picture. The first picture was normal, with background noise at such a level that it wasn’t distracting. The second picture was done where the volume of the background noise (talking, moving chairs, etc.) was just as loud as the teacher’s instructions. (to simulate someone with an attention problem).
Another one was a writing exercise, where you were given a certain amount of time to fill out a worksheet, but instead of just writing normally, each person was given a mirror, and had to write correctly while looking in the mirror (perception not the same as what comes out on paper, obviously).
During gym, we were doing tennis, and we had to play with our non-dominant hand.
Hope that helps!
Re: Learning Disablities Presentation
Would you please send me info on learning disabilities-definition, causes, prevalence, treatment, etc.
yes, like feeling different objects with gloves on, blindfolded and guessing what it is. Feeling items without looking and guessing again as to what it is. Show a video, I believe it is called “FAT CITY”. A special ed school or therapists may have a copy. Try a library in a school with an education dept.
