I am new and would love to have as much help as possible.
I am wondering if group activities are the best method for including a child who has a disability. If there are any other ways of including a child without making them feel uncomfortable?
Any response would be a help and appreciated
Thank you,
Jake
Re: Groups in classrooms
Using groups is great for all students. I also saw something called clock buddies. Every child has a picture of a clock and at each hour there is the name of a student (If Tim has Jim at one on his clock Jim has to have Tim on his at the same time) So all the teacher says is get with your one o’clock buddy and they are paired up. What is nice about this is that it is always changing so one student isn’t helping the same child all the time.
The most important part of including students is just keeping the environment consistent- Consistent expectations- no surprises and very relaxed.. There aere no wrong answers kind of philosophy. Never call on a child to read or answer if he is not raising his hand or give the child the heads up that you will be asking him to answer #5 so be ready.. Work off their strengths too… If they arent great in reading but great in math let them shine in math!! Good luck!
