Down's Syndrome Inclusion

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I will have a mainstreamed child in my classroom this year with no training in SpEd, a SpEd teacher that doesn’t know what she’s doing, and no other resources available. I need information on discipline programs that are designed for DS children. I also need a good academic sign-language book that is designed for the school environment.
Current ideas:
(1) Photograph the major parts of her days and glue them to index cards for her to manipulate and communicate with. “Where are we going next?”
(2) Ask for teacher training to be included in her IEP. Can I do this?
THat’s it! HELP!

There are several good websites with information about Downs. I would recommend starting at SERI- Special Education Resources on the Net (www.seriweb.com) and checking it out from there. Another good source is by a teacher who posts on teachers.net as Pickle, her address is www.geocities.com/abclinks. It is a page about autism primarily but she has some excellent alternative curriculum information. I might also check out the Special Education Board at teachers.net, there are a lot of folks who work with students who have profound handicaps and they will have some good information for you.
