Voice recognition

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anyone know how powerful a computer you need to run voice recognition software? I heard you need state of the art.

Depends somewhat on what software you’re using but, yes, speed & memory are important for it.
http://www.edc.org/spk2wrt/ is a good website for information about it.

The newer versions of NaturallySpeaking work reasonably well on a Pentium II, with 64MB of RAM. A PIII would be better but a PII with plenty of RAM should work well enough. If you have 128MB of RAM then you will have more success. However, I would advise upgrading to 256MB of RAM if at all possible.

Just remember, with voice recognition the more RAM the better.

We found 128K of RAM to be insufficient. Dragon Naturally Speaking would work but it was too slow for our VERY IMPATIENT CHILD. Also important is to close as many applications as possible before starting DNS. And it worked more efficiently with WordPad. With Word, it was too slow. We dictate into Notepad or WordPad, then if we need more powerful formatting, we cut and paste into Word.
