programs

I have a 15 year old son who has been found to have problems with his visual processing speed and verbal short-term memory. I have been reading on this site and there are a number of programs discussed. Would any of these programs be suitable for the above problems with the age of my son?

For visual processing, usually the first step is to arrange for a developmental vision evaluation by an optometrist who specializes in this area (regular optometrists and opthalmologists do not have the training). You can find these specialists in your area at http://www.covd.org

If there are visual efficiency problems (things like slow focusing, small field of vision, convergence issues), then vision therapy can usually bring these things up to age-appropriate levels. Often vision therapy is not enough to get all of the visual processing skills up to par. After vision therapy, PACE (Processing and Cognitive Enhancement) is often very helpful in developing visual processing skills. PACE website is http://www.learninginfo.com

The verbal short-term memory is an entirely different issue. I assume you mean difficulty in remember multi-step directions? The best first step to address this is a CAPD evaluation by an audiologist who specializes in this area (again, most audiologists do not have the training). You can find CAPD audiologists at http://pages.cthome.net/cbristol/ If an auditory decoding deficit is diagnosed, a sound therapy such as FastForWord (http://www.scilearn.com) can be very helpful.

All of these programs can be very helpful to a 15yo, so I would encourage you to research them further.
