homeschooling

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I have given up on the school system. I will be homeschooling my son next year (going into 10th and has a nvld). I know he will do better at home. This year we brought my 1st grader home and she had a wonderful year. I’d like to hear from other homeschool moms with ld kids.

I homeschool all 4 of my kids. I have one who is autistic. He is five years old. Please do feel free to send me email. I also have a website I have established for parents of children with autism. I have included several homeschool links there. Here is my site url. If you go to the “parent info” page, then in the index go to the “homeschooling information” section, you will see my homeschool links. There are several links there for homeschooling special needs children, all the way through high school. You should be able to find some good information there that applies to your son, because those links are for special needs in general, not autism specifically.

I will make one specific mention. You should first go to the “HSLDA — Home School Legal Defense Association” website and seriously consider joining, especially if your son is currently under an IEP. Many parents who have removed children with special needs from public school have had to endure nasty legal/truancy issues over their decision to homeschool. Apparently public school personnel do not believe parents are able to homeschool their own children with special needs, even tho as you have discovered, it is generally the public schools who have no idea how to do it, which is why parents are always fighting to get the services their children need. So it is my opinion that you should contact HSLDA before you officially withdraw your son, so you can be accepted as a member, plus they will give you great advice on exactly when and how to withdraw him, to keep the hassles to a minimum. It is $100 per year and everyone I have talked to, says it is the best $100 they have ever spent.

I enjoy homeschooling and I am so glad I have never enrolled any of my children in public school. I wish you much success in your homeschooling of your son. You will find it a lot of work but very rewarding.
