Institutional Care / Sleep Away School

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Do any of you out there have any experience with LD schools that are sleep away (boarding) for children (teen in this case) with severe behavior problems? Do they even work?

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t.

There are some excellent places that have programs that work; there are other places that are long on price and short on true effectiveness. ONe thing to look for is just how clearly the school folks can tell you what kind of kid they think they can hlep. If they think they can help any kiddo… then they’ve probably got a whole bunch of kids with different kinds of needs that often conflict, so they won’t be meeting any of those needs all too well. If they can honestly tell you “this is the kind of problem we deal with best” — and give you the details — then they’re worth a good look. And talking to other parents is good, too. If their main criteria for acceptance is pocketbook size… need I say more?
