CONCERTA

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Our son has been on CONCERTA (18 mg) for 3 weeks. He is 7 years old, and weighs 80 Lbs. He has shown a marked improvement at school. (We decided not to tell the school he was beginning medication). Other than a few “tummy cramps” in the first few days, we have not seen any eating problems. All in all we are very pleased so far.

My son is 10 and was, about 3 months ago, taken off Adderall and put on Concerta. I too have had great results. He claims that it helps him feel better and more in control.

My daughter and I have been seeing a psychiatrist who cannot make up his mind if my daughter is ADD or not. He keeps talking about what wonderful results he’s had with Concerta, but he refuses to try my daughter on it. I was wondering if your children are having any sleep problems or not. My daughter’s pediatrician prescribed Ritalin and then Adderall last year. My daughter was not sleeping (she doesn’t sleep enough anyway), so the pediatrician recommended a we see a psychiatrist.

I’m considering looking for a new psychiatrist. Anyway, it’s good to hear of some hopeful results.

Greetings Margo,

Getting up in the morn and going to sleep at night are frequently significant problems for people with ADD. My daughter, who has CAPD, VPD and we now suspect ADD, has great difficulty going to sleep at night (she does not take any stimulant meds). She says she “can’t turn her mind off”. Taking meds such as Ritalin or Adderall can make the sleep problems even worse. Since your daughter’s psychiatrist can’t decide if she has ADD or not, why don’t you check out the ADD website by Dr. Amen which outlines the 6 Types of ADD. Go to the interactive checklist which will help determine if ADD exists and, if so, which type. This checklist/ questionnaire is not meant to provide a diagnosis but it serves as a guide to help identify problems. www.BrainPlace.com

Hope this helps.

Blessings, momo
