I started homeschooling my son last year for 5th grade. After I took him out of the public school he lost his 90 minute daily special ed. services for reading and writing. The district kept his IEP intact in case he would return to school, which at the time I thought may be a possibility. We did well last year, but he is still behind grade level in reading. Writing was a difficult for us.
In June it was time to rewrite his IEP for 6th grade. Our school district now allows 90 minutes a month of service for homeschooled LD student. They determined that it would be a good idea for him to go to the middle school every 2 weeks for service in writing. I have mixed feelings. It was a difficult subject for us, and their help may be nice. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel that they will be judging what we’re doing at home. I also wonder if that limited time offered will be worth our time, and if they will really be able to accomplish anything.
Has anyone opted to go this route and bring their kids to school for LD services? Has it been worthwhile? I’d love any input.
Thanks,
Cathy
Re: Spec. Ed. Services for Homeschooled son
Hi Cathy I am curious about the hours allotted for your son. Will the teacher be coming to you, or will you be going to the school?
Will you be able to participate in the activity so that you can learn what is being done and relate to the teacher?
What about his attention span? Will he be able to cope with 90 min in one session? (Will the teacher be able to cope?) Why couldn’t it be split to 30min or 45 min sessions?
Anyway good luck with this added resource, keep us posted.

Re: Spec. Ed. Services for Homeschooled son
He will be going to the school for two 45 minute sessions per month. That should be every other week. The school district has never done this before, so I have no idea how it will all work out yet. I don’t think they really know yet either. He will probably be there with other kids at the same time, so I’m pretty sure that I won’t be allowed to participate. However, I will insist that after the session they show me what they have been working on. I assume that they will show him what to do and then send an assignment home for him to work on for the next session. I will let everybody know how it goes for us.
Thanks,
Cathy
If you get a teacher who gets to make a few extra bucks by doing this “homeschool” project, who’s going to already have a caseload and a half, so she’ll slap something together at the last minute every two weeks… yea, it’s a waste of time. (That’s the way it went in the VA school where I taught for some folks).
If you get somebody who is organized and can work wiht you to make her expertise helpful, then I’d go for it.
