Need your help regarding job hunting tactics

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Since there seem to be alot of smart people on this board, I thought I would pick your brains. Right now, I am unemployed and need work. One job hunting tactic I have thought of is to target companies on my area of interest but then I get stuck if they don’t advertise their job openings on the board. How should I approach them?

One tactic I have thought of is to find whatever research I can on these organizations and then send a letter outlining my strengths as to how I might be able to help them according to whatever information I find. But I still feel like I only have a sketchy outline.

Your thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated as my LD causes me to get stuck in the various stages of the job hunting process. Unfortunately, no one seems to know what I am talking about but I know you folks understand.

PS - I have tried reading various career books like “What Color is Your Parachute” but all they do is confuse me even more even though I have tried reading it several times.

Dear Pt
I can relate to your frustration . I had the same difficulty as you did
I was so interested in health care but I found out the hard way health care was not for me
so during my frustration I checked my local library for other books to help me and lo and behold I
found a great book called job hunting for the learning disabled . I read the book from cover -cover
and I found some great ideas in this book

My suggestion is to check your local library or ask the reference librarian if they may be able to help
you out

Searching for jobs can be quite tricky if they are hidden jobs But I would apply to places around you
even if they are not hiring that day or week but someone may plan on leaving or retiring in the future
so I would put in an application any way it would not hurt My last suggestion is to call call call
I would call the places your application so they have a name to remember when you call they will re
you if you don’t call back they may forget you and move on to the next applicant

believe me it works to call once a week to ask about the status of your application
lastly start with jobs closer to your home and then work your way out b/c you need to think about
travel time if you take city transportation re you need to rely on their schedule so its best to start
in area near your home

Good Luck in your job search
Michelle

I think that taking an inventory of our strehgths and weaknesses is something we need to do and we need to do it accurately.

I used to be in sales and there are a few rules that can never be broken.

1. If something is not true don’t say it. Don’t even imply it.

2. Explain the negatives of your product first but don’t dwell on them.

At a job interview you are selling yourself and your skills. You have to understand your employers needs. To determine his needs you have to ask the right questions. You probably have most of those answers but it doesn’t hurt to clarify. Then check your inventory to see if you have what it take to fill his needs.

I have considered being up front and totally disclosing my disability and leaving the employer with something called the puppy dog close. Tell him try me out for free and see if I can cut the mustard. It will make it a lot harder for him to turn you down.

I have asked OVR for assistance with employers but I found that would be like asking Satan for direction to heaven.

Michelle - Thanks for your suggestion on the book called “Job Hunting for the Learning Disabled”. I looked for it on Amazon but it didn’t come up. Any suggestions as I haven’t seen anything similar?

What type of position did you end up with if you don’t mind my asking?

Ball - Thanks to Martin Yates Book “Knock Em Dead”, I have come up with some questions to ask at the end of the interview that do what you are suggesting. So far, it has worked well although unfortunately, the jobs are too problematic that I have interviewed for.

Hey, your strategy of offering a free tryout is worth a shot. I think in this day and age, you have to take risks to get hired and frankly, the alternative is worse in my opinion.

I thought you were having good success with the voc rehab folks at the place you had moved to. What happened?

In order for me to get “services” I needed to bring them a letter of award from social security. Even though Social Security has determined that I am disabled I need to provide them this thing called a letter of award. Social Security is taking forever sending it to me. I explained that to the piece of @!#$ working at DVR but they closed my case after it was given to another counselor who sent me a nasty letter.

Aparently, they don’t know who they are screwing with. I am going to be working on a volunteer basis with a local TBI chapter and I hope to cross paths with them a lot. I learned a lot dealing with NY state VR and these bumpkins here in NC will be no match for Ball. I’ll have the women in tears and the men wishing they were wearing Depends.

It is time these bastards learn a little compassion and humility. We are developing strategies to deal with their tactics.

They will be crapping their pants when 20 or 30 people from our surrounding chapter show up with signs saying OVR sucks.

I’m actually glad they screwed with me. Now I have the moral authority to go to war.

We have got to stop complaining and start acting!

Hi PT:

I was reading your posting regarding your difficulty finding employment. If you receive money from Social Security for your disablity, you should log on to their website. The web address is www.ssa.gov. There is a program in the website called Ticket to Work. They will take you through the process. Just tell them you want to work. And they will take it from there.
