ld parents teaching children with ld

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi, im 38 and I have ld. I have never been tested but i know. My 12 yr old twin boys have been slow at everything their hole life. They didnt walk untill they were 18 months, so things go off to a very slow start. When they reached school age i started asking the school to test them for any learning problems. They told me that they could not be tested untill they were in the second grade. With already knowing that they were going to have problems i wanted to get them all the help they could get EARLY. well now that they are in the 5 grade ( i held them back in second grade) and having a learning problem myself i dont know how to help them with any homework, it gets me confused. they are in specila classes at school but still have a lot of homework that on some i cant seem to help them through it, i also have dyslexia so i have to read and reread the instructions several times before i understand it. i guess my ? is how can i help them? i dont want them to go through the same teasing such as i did in school.

I think your boys school should test them to pen point their learning problems. And see if they can find or you find someone to help them after school. And being 38 isn’t old silly!! So get tested. I’m sure you have many gifts that may find out during your test. Oh buy the way, I’m dyslexic. I found out when I was 24 and I’m 26 now.
Write back!! Dyslexic in Virginia,

years ago their dr. sent them to a child study center. so they finaly got tested. they get tested every year now. the school that they went from k-2 would not help them i had 7 meetings with the (ARD) with NO help for them. after being sooooo mad at them that day i took them out of that school and started driving them 35 miles(one way) to another town. i moved a little closer to that town but it has a population of 200 so no work there. now i only have to drive them 80 miles two round trips a day. there are only 112 kids in the HOLE school. so they are getting more att. from the teacher (18-25 kids in the biger school per class) they have 12 kids in class and that is 4th and 5th grade combined. so i feel that i am doing all i can to get them a better education than i had, but its when they bring that HOMEWORK home, im lost in most of it. i have looked on the web for any kinda of learning centers in our area, yeah right we live 150 miles from the closes one.so its all up to me that the HOMEWORK gets done right. it stresses me out so much!!!!! i just feel that im not doing enough to help them, i dont want them to be just PASSED along like so many other kids. and thank you all for the kind words of encuragement,

here is an idea ask the teacher if the boys can bring a small tape recorder to set on her desck. I would tell her the situachon (she cant help if she dosent know) and ask her if she would record the mane instuchons for the day. Remember the more you read the easer it will get. Its not like riding a bike for us, if we stop it take us a litlle longer to get back on.Also try oral report,as well as tacking there nots on tape.I dont know thous things worked for me, hoppe it helps. Ok, first of all…do the children have an IEP at their school. If not, and they have a diagnosis, get one. The children are entitled to it under Special Educaiton laws. If a child has an IEP they have more rights, not less, and an IEP has to be followed by the letter. If not, you can easily report the school.

Also, I’d check around. Call up your local Community Services department and talk to case provider there. They usually go to many schools dealing with special needs children and could possibly tell you which school handles the needs of special needs children bests.
