Math & LD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am taking a math class at a community college near where I live. I really have been struggling thru this class, because of my learning disability. The teacher has been very supportive, helping me in any way that I can. She is also willing to meet with me after class too. The college that I’m attending has a Math Resource Ctr, and they have computers in there too. I have been using colored pencils to help me understand the problems more clearly. Does anyone out there have similiar problems related to Math?? I am taking this class for the 2nd time, and need it for my degree. My degree is only in Associate in Arts in General Education. I also will have to take some alegebra classes too, to get this degree. I will be talking to my academic counselor today about this and other issues too.

I’ve met with six people today with similar problems — I help out at the tutoring end. So… nope… I can promise you you’re not alone.
Now, if only I could find my sketchbook that’s required for Web Design I…. it’s gotta be somewhere… I try to laugh when “file management” is still such a hassle, even on the computer!

You’re certinally not alone. My LD rears it’s ugly head and sense of humor most powerfully in math—I can keep a nearly perfect mental checkbook of how much I have in the bank at any one time, but I can’t multiply or divide without a calculator, and even then I still have to work the problem through several times to make sure I keep coming up with the same answers. That’s especially frustrating, as my working memory is very unreliable when when it comes to numbers and half the time I forget what number I came up with last time before I’m halfway through checking my answer. That frustrates me, because as I said, I can keep a fantastic mental log of how much money I have in the bank in relation to how much I last got paid and how much I’ve spent. You’d think if I couldn’t do one, I couldn’t do the other. Are you having trouble lining problems up and working through them both, or do you more or less understand the idea behind them but have difficulty working the calculations and remembering the exact formulas?

I think I’m LD in math but never diagnosed. I had to take statistics and finance one course at a time in summer school but did make a B-. It helped to only focus on one course at a time and I needed every minute of down time to complete my homework which would sometimes take me 5 or 6 hours a night. I still needed a tutor in finance. I have a masters degree now. Keep working.
