Teachers with learning disabilities

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello,

I’m studying at university Laval at Quebec city to become a teacher. I had deep dyslexia when I was a kid and now it is a lot better. The purpose of my message is that I am doing a research paper about teachers with learning disabilities. I found a few articles but not as many as I would like:( Is there any teachers with learning disabilities who would like to answer me back or any body who can help me with this subject?

Thank you,

Josephine

I personally think that teachers with learning disability make good teachers
for the reason that they have to “filter” the material they teach through
their mind and find the best way to teach it. This at least is my experience
in teaching. For many years I taught math with pretty good success.
I developed methods that helped that were useful to me and eventually helped
my students.

Before my son was born, I worked over five years as a preschool teacher. I have, however, worked with children up to age 16. My son is now seven years old and the math they send as homework to me is confusing. I try to help him as I can, but math is my downfall.

My son was diagnosed with a mild form of Autism, but his math skills are remarkable.

Hi Josephine,

I am a substitute teacher. I don’t have my teaching degree. I have learning disabilities. I have not gone to a neurophyscholist to be diagnosed. But did have a test done while I was at College a few years back and the psycholist told me I had a memory disorder and to just throw in the towel there was no hope for me. I was very discouraged at that time and did drop out of school because I felt there was no help for me. But where I am at to substitute a degree is not required. I substitute for a lot of resourse classes, speech, special ed classes. Actually I have a lot of teachers that ask just for me where I am busy all week long. The children want me back because I take the time with the children that have that have a harder time in class. I am what you call non conventional teacher. For example I had a 2nd grade class Monday. They were doing writers work shop where they had to write a story and share it with the class. There were 3 children that I knew had a hard time writing. I noticed instead of writing they were drawing. So when it was time to share the story ( I didn’t make an issue about it) I ask the 3 children that did pictures instead of writing if they care to share the story with us. I have to say they had no problem telling the story about their picture. I felt they did their required assignment so what if it wasn’t in writen form but picture and verbal form? I believe we need to build our childrens strengths not tear them down because they can’t not do everything by the book.
I would love to be a full time teacher but I know as it stands now unless there is help to get me through my weak points I would not make it through the 4 years. But I have a passion for helping children with learning disabilities. Not only because of mine learning problems but because I have a couple of children of my own with learning disabilities. One of them fell throw the cracks of the education system. If I can just help one child…it would make me happy.
