How to approach Dr...who do I go to

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

This is new for me…as a self diagnosed ADD’er, I am ready to take a step in getting treatment for what I am living with. Im so glad to read all your posts, and know that things will get better…I have what I suspect is ADD Inatentive. I have NO hyperactivity what-so-ever. My main issue is that I feel like the LAZIEST person in the entire world. I make a conscience effort everyday to go to work and push myself to the limit, as I have to make a living, but once I leave the doors to the building, I am worthless to the rest of the world and my life, apartment. My mother is at her wits end to have to come over to her 30 yr old daughters apartment to help her clean and change the litterbox…because my F*ck it attitude is not flying anymore… So my question is, How do I approach my primary care Dr on Monday with this issue. Im sure he going to think that Im just crazy and tell me that Im just lazy or something..but I truly believe there is more depth to my problem than just craziness…I would appreciate any feedback from anyone, especially when the topic of this condition was first brough to light….thanks!!!!!

Tell your doctor what you told us— what your life is like, that you suspect it’s ADD inattentive and need help to manage it. You don’t sound crazy—it sounds a lot like ADD. If your doctor dismisses your problems as laziness or stupidity, don’t believe it. You can always ask your doctor who you might see for further evaluation if you aren’t satisfied with the advice you’re given.

Good luck to you!

It could also be depression, which I don’t suffer from although many doctors try to shove me into that pigeonhole.
If it is depression the best treatment is a combination of appropriate medication and talk therapy. Stress the words *combination* and **appropriate** and of course IF it is. Since the new anti-depression drugs came out, it is too easy for lazy medical providers to just hand over pills rahter than investigating deeply.

It could also be a thyroid problem, which I do suffer from quite bady and which can be really bad if misdiagnosed as depression or other including ADD.
if it is a thyroid problem the treatment is thyroid hormone, extremely effective but takes time to regulate and a very very touchy issue that requires you to be tested regularly to see if the levels are right. Antidepression pills will just make a low-thyroid person feel funny. Stimulants used to treat ADD will temporarily mask the low thyroid, but then cause total collapse later.

You will need to search, and often search quite hard, for a *good* doctor who will cheeck out *all* the possibilities and not just hand out his favourite pills.
