Where would I go to get tested for adhd. I know it runs in my family and I have most of the symptoms described. Do I ask my family physician or do I have to see a psychiatrist
Re: help
She’s right: see a psychiatrist. Only psychiatrists can diagnose ADD and treat with medication. Psychologists just talk you through problems.
Re: help
I would search for someone who is very ADD-“savvy”. This can be an MD, a Ph.D, a clinical social worker, a professional counselor, etc. Plenty of psychiatrists don’t believe ADD exists in adults, so I would look for a professional who is well-versed in ADD with lots of experience in doing a differential diagnosis (being able to sort out ADD from other disorders).
I maintain a directory of ADD professionals on my website at www.addconsults.com.
Hope this helps-

Zinjay,
I’m pretty new to this as well. My experience has been that most family doctors don’t have the expertise in this area, and you need to have someone who specializes not only in psychiatry (or psychology), but in neuropsychological evaluation and ADD/ADHD as well. They would be the most up to date and have the most experience to recommend the best medication (if appropriate) as well. I would try to get some referrals — you want someone who is good, not just someone with the right diploma. Are you in school (including college or grad school)? If so, I would start by asking at the counseling center, or the learning disabilities services center, for a recommendation. If you know anyone who has ADD, you might ask them for a referral as well.
Good luck.
