Preschool Special Education

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello.
I will be transitioning from a regular classroom teacher to a preschool special education teacher in the fall. I will have to obtain a special education certification within three years, but that will not help me at the beginning. Since I have no experience in this setting, I thought I would ask here for advice, suggestion, etc. of books to read, sites that would be profitable, and general ideas to help in the transition.

Thanks for your help,
Vicky

What about volunteering - even part-time - over the summer at a preschool? A special ed. preschool would be ideal but any preschool would give you hands-on experience in working with preschoolers. Many day care centers and summer camps have a preschool component. Homeless shelters often take volunteers to help with the young children that are living there.

I ‘ve taught every level but preschool is the most fun. Speak in a pleasant, clear tone and preschoolers are naturals for trying hard to do everything you ask of them.
