Reading Rods

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anyone have any experience with Reading Rods from Learning Resources? I’m in the midst of a happy dilemma…I have to spend $1000 this week for our sped department, and these look like they might be a good supplement for various decoding approaches.

Thanks…

No, but my general rule of thumb is to mistrust gimmicks and toys. They get a small amount of use and then most of them gather dust, lose vital parts, etc.

Can you spend a lot of that money on good books? Reading lessons make a heck of a lot more sense if thay can be applied to actual reading.

I have 3 or so sets of the reading rods - a donation from a grandmother of a student. I agree with Victoria—mine never get used. Too much trouble to keep organized to be useful. I can show the students the same thing so much faster with my white board. I would much rather have books.

Does your resource room have computers? If so, the Sound Reading CDs from http://www.soundreading.com are an excellent supplement to any reading program (up to about middle-3rd grade). Most children enjoy them and don’t mind working on them.

Hi,
My SPED Director bought my program a dozen pocket charts for making words lessons. I saw them in a catalog from Teaching Resource Center and knew that they would be a great hands-on lesson. I am using them with a Scholastic book called Making Words with Word Families. Anyhow, they are GREAT and I would recommend you check them out. I plan to get a lot of use of of them. They were about 12.00 each.
