Reading Assessment

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Two of my older children are doing some remediation for their reading this year. I would like to give them a pre-test and then a post-test at the end of the school year to see if what they’ve done has been effective. In the past I have used the Iowa Tests obtained from Bob Jones. However, I really have no need of the Math and other portions. I was just wondering if someone could recommend a decent reliable test that I could administer at home which would cover the basic “verbal” tests - vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, etc. Or is there a better way??
Thanks.

I’d look online for other sources for the Iowa test where you didn’t have to get the whole package, since that’s what you’re familiar with.
There is also a Stanford test (though you definitely want to use different versions of the same test for pre & post testing, since they don’t always compare well; my students often did better on the Stanford. Whether the test was “easier” or just better matched to what I taught them, I don’t know.)
