Math and reading set up in Secondary school

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

What are the basics of setting up a Special Day Class in a junior high, a high school or a middle school?

What do we look for in a reading program?

What do we look for in a math program?

Please please note: this would be my first year in this program, so I do not think I could set up all kinds of wonderful programs which require money and/or training. What could I set up in just your average school if I walk in and they give me a room, okay, here is the roll sheet, teach them.

thanks

john

A special education teacher should know the answers to the numerous questions you have been asking, that is what a college education and class practicum is for. With first year teachers there is usually a mentorship where a seasoned veteran takes a new teacher under their wing and shows them the ropes. For children in the special day class there is a lot riding in regards to compliance with the IEP’s. The children in an SDC have complex and varying needs both physically, mentally and academically.

Before you can teach in an SDC one needs to have a credential with a special class authorization. In some instances districts will use teachers with emergency credentials for SDC’s but they have to be taking classes to get the authorization or the district gets in trouble for having unqualified personnel in an SDC.
