Can the results of the WISC III determine if a child is both gifted and LD?
My son had major subtest scatter he did not score below a 10 on any subtest and scored several above 15,including two 18’s. He got 126 for verbal and 106 for performance. Verbal comprehension 124, perceptual organization 107, freedom from distractibility 118, processing speed 104.
Because there was such a big difference they would not give him a full scale score, but kept the two scores seperate.
Further testing - TVPS-R, Beery VMI both showed a visual processing deficit. Specifically with visual form constancy and visual closure.
On the LET II, he scored in the 99.99 percentile…
I am very new to this… Any suggestions? The whole dual expceptional?
Thanks,
Kristin

Re: WISC III
I did discuss all the test results with the district psychologist and his teachers. The psychologist told me that in her opinion he was both gifted/LD.
Unfortunately, we had all this testing/initial IEP done last May (2004), 4 weeks before the end of 6th grade. Over the summer we relocated to southern California (from northern California), and he went from elementary to jr. high. The IEP, of course follows us, but we have to wait 30 days and then redo the whole needs/goals thing, they have different classes/placements in this district, or so I am told.
The school district here seems to be alot different/bigger. I feel that I was lucky last spring, as I did not have a clue what an IEP really was, and the school staff worked really hard for my son. I think that because down here it is a much larger district with so many more kids, I am going to need to really know what I am doing/talking about in order to try to properly advocate for my son.
I am just trying to get more information/feedback/opinions on his tests and assessments, so I can 1.) Get the information. 2.) Have some places to start looking. 3.) Be more prepared for whatever may come up at our meeting in a couple weeks.
So, thanks for any info.
Kristin
Re: WISC III
You CANNOT diagnose LD on the basis of the WISC alone. More testing will be needed. Giftedness can be demonstrated on the WISC, but the test was not actually designed to measure extremes on either end of the scale and may not give a really good picture of strengths or weaknesses. Insist on MUCH more testing.
Re: WISC III
I am going to put all the tests and results up w/ the results in a new post. If you could look at those and tell me what you think I would really appreciate it.
Kristin.
Look for Testing in CA.
Sounds like something I would discuss with the school psychologist or diagnostian. Did the person who did the testing give you any information?
