Autism in kindergarten

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a student teacher in a kindergarten classroom in Southern California. I begin my student teaching assignment in a few weeks and have just learned that there is a student with Autism in my classroom. I have worked with Autistic children in the past, however, none as young as kindergarten. I know that not all strategies work for every student. I want to be the best teacher possible to this student. Is there anyone who has experience with Autism in general or Autism in kindergarten? I would love to hear some advice.

Well not all autism is created equal. How severely autistic is the child? Does the child have language? What behaviors does he show? What kind of interactions, if any does he have with the other children? Give us more
info to work with.
