PACE Program

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone heard of or better yet, tried the PACE Program for LD?

From what I understand, it takes a multidiscipline approach to teaching kids to read etc.

There has been a lot of discussion of PACE on this site — use the search option at the top of the page and you will find lots of info and ideas.

I am a trained PACE provider and have put a few children through the program. Master The Code is the company’s reading program. MTC is a follow-on program to PACE. PACE works on developing a wide range of cognitive skills that contribute to ease of academic learning. There are approximately 100 different exercises with very incremental stages of mastery. A good provider adjusts the program to suit the individual needs of the child, the basic aim being to strengthen weak skills. Many of these skills contribute to reading, but they are almost all subskills that will make learning how to read easier. There tends to be a “blanket” effect on performance — meaning that the child begins to find many academic subjects easier to learn, not just reading.

Of course, results vary considerably depending on what specific problems the child brings to the program. PACE is not a cure-all for every possible learning disability. It achieves perhaps the most dramatic gains for students who appear to be bright, but for unknown reasons perform poorly in academics.

PACE is a very good program, and I wish more children could benefit from it. To obtain optimal results, it is best to be fairly certain that the child has no major unremediated sensory problems going in (e.g., severe developmental vision delays or severe sensory integration disorder).
