i am begging for someone to help me.I am in Florida. My child is in a co taught class.I want to know if it is legal to have her come in before or after school to make up work she missed due to an absence????????
This teacher tells me it is not an iep but absence issue!
My daughter is to get extra time and this teacher flip flops about giving it during the school day or sending work home.
Please someone tell me if they can legally do this.I appreciate your help.
Re: add and keeping kids after school
let’s see… you have a teacher who cares enough to give up her own time to provide one on one help for your child. Does she flip flop or does she try to help your child during the day, only to find that the other children need her, too.
hmmm. let’s see. Is it important that your child have the requisite knowledge to go on?
let’s see….. if you keep complaining this teacher will definitely back off. Your child won’t get the help and the teacher won’t offer afterschool one-on-one.
Re: add and keeping kids after school
I too think the teacher is actually going out of her way to help you. It is harder for a child who is LD to make up work during the day because they usually don’t finish anything early. My son has made up work after school and frankly I was grateful.

Also...if it is due to ABSENCE and not LD...
isn’t this a CLASS policy, the same for all children? Even if your child’s absences are a result of her difficulties (i.e. a friend of mine has kids on meds who occasionally miss because of sleep disturbances) she will only be hurt if she falls further behind…and will benefit from doing the work as an ‘extra’, unless time spent is excessive. And if teacher is keeping her to replace teaching, not seatwork, this is very good!
Is it a problem to have her stay behind? It is not punishment, even though the child might at first perceive it as punishment (most LD kids hate to stay late!) but is a necessary result of missing time — a life lesson that we all have to learn eventually.
Our kids suffer so much at the hands of ‘school’ that it is hard sometimes to determine when we should side with the teacher…
Re: add and keeping kids after school
My step daughter fell under the same dilemma in 4th grade. she was held after every afternoon to make up work..it wasn’t that she didn’t understand the concepts, but the teacher required her to finish all her assignments. this upset my daughter and actually made her resent school even more.
We informed our son’s current teacher and the school psychologist that we would not allow that to happen to him. the current teacher agreed with us. she still sends homework/makeup work to us, but if we feel he has grasped the subject, he does not need to complete the entire assignment.
The FLA teacher might have good intentions but could be harming the child more than helping.
What does making up work have to do with an IEP? Was her absence due to receiving school provided therapy? If so, perhaps you have a point.
