I have a ds who is 7yo, who has high-funcationing autism. We have homeschooled for 2yrs. This year the state is saying that I can’t homeschool him. We are thinking of putting him in a priviate school until the battle with the state is over. I was wondering if anyone has an austic child, and how do you teach the child at home?

Re: Does anyone have a child that has High-Funcationing Autism
Would you mind telling me who Dad is? I have stumbling across this board while doing an internet search to see if I can find helpful ways to teach my son.
As for snow, we don’t have any yet, but I know we will get some. I am Snowy on another board, and wanted to keep it simple.
God Bless

Dad is a frequent poster on the boards. I think you would have more luck posting on the “Parenting an LD Child” board, as more people would see your post.

Sorry — you can post a message to Dad on the Teaching LD board, or you can use the Private Message (pm) function of this board, just look him up on the memberlist, above, to send him a message — if he has opted in (and I think he has) he will get an email notification.
Just being silly about the snow — we both get a fair amount I believe … :?

Hey I’m the unofficial Aspy onliner here. I did a whole curriculum for my nephew who is hfa— too bad they didn’t use it. I don’t know why the state won’t allow you to homeschool your own kid. I don’t know what the resources are in your state (there aren’t any here). I would look for a school for ld (as opposed to bd/ed) kids which has students on the autism spectrum. Some schools are very good about it and others don’t know squat. There are now schools for kids with on the high end of the spectrum but I think mostly in CA??
As for homeschooling, there are lots of things to do. You can send me a private message, but one of the main things is that you take whatever your kid is totally hooked on—for me it was dogs (my nephew it was computers) and you write the whole curriculum around it. I know someone who’s daughter was into bugs and they did that. You can look up “learning webs” to give you an idea how that works— but say for “dogs” you can study science ( dogs have hearts, brains, etc like people so you can do comparitive physiology at a simple or complex level, genetics of breeds, social structure, ecology— food chain that sort of thing— depending on level, dog senses, etc.), math (dog food per size of dog, counting dogs, subtracting dogs, no. of dogs in population, etc.), history (different breeds, history of wolves to dogs, etc.), etc. you take the subject and gradually pull in more outside world stuff. One of the parents on an autism list who’s kid was into Nintendo eventually had her kid writing the manufactorer of Ninetendo about various game ideas, product improvements, complaints, so she drew in writing skills, etc. For social skills I would read up on Carol Grey’s social stories. Also look up this webpage. They have an active parent group, that might be able to help.

Part of the problem comes from the fact that a doctor we went to wrote in his report that homeschool wasn’t good for my son. My son has theraphies at the public school, I gave one of the therapist the report which she then told the state that it was a good idea if I didn’t homeschool him. Tuesday we are going to tour a priviate school that we might put him in.
God Bless
Post a request and/or a private message to Dad, who keeps himself and us informed about autism.
snowy in Vermont? Ha! We got you beat in Montreal.
