High School Block Schedule

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi…I am searching for information regarding supporting special education students in a block scheduling school. We are currently on the A/B 4 classes per day schedule and we are finding it very difficult to support students in the regular education classes that we cannot staff. Any time there is a big test in a certain subject we are pulled from the reg. ed. classes that we support to monitor the tests. This happens at least three times per week. We are also looking for suggestions about how to deal with the lack of direct contact with students. Since we do not have any study halls it is a real struggle to contact the students on a daily basis and keep up with them regarding thier homework. Anyone with good info please let me know. We are also looking to visit school that have a good system in place so if you know of one, let me know. Thanks

Welp, at least I can offer sympathy. YOu’re working with the antithesis of universal design — create a system and then try to force fit those special ed students into it with ideas from non-block-schedules.
I think you’re going to need to re-examine the infrastructure and make some priorities. Basically, teachers can’t be in two places at once, period, and meet the legally defined student needs. I’d push for pulling in folks to be test monitors for starters, and have some serious brainstorming sessoins for figuring out how to rework things in the future.

What exactly do you mean by “Pulled to monitor the tests?” What are you required to do when your students have tests?
