Well my life is pretty much over!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’ve always know that I’ve had Ld but not to the extent of what I just discovered. I took a full comprehensive IQ test that was performed by a certified diagnostician (spelling is wrong I know) and discovered that my full scale IQ is 86 (verbal comprehension is 100)…. This is a real low blow and almost garantees that I will not be able to get a college degree, I’ll be stuck working at Target for the rest of my life. I had aspirations of going back to college but at the age of 24 I don’t think it’s worth it. Not to mention the average IQ of a college graduate is like 114. Oh well I guess I can look at the bright side of life and realize that I may be eligable for a state assisted living or something like that, since I’m basically borderline….

You are able to work at a place like Target? That’s more than me. I understand your frustration.

But I really, really don’t think that test was taken on a good day - you are able to speak your mind and make sense. IQ test results can change from time to time, there can be a lot of things stopping you from getting the right result - being nervous, anxious, tired, and therefore not fully understand how to do this and that in the test - and then get a wrong result in the end.

When I first took a dyscalculia (the math ld) test, I was told I’m on a 3. grade level in math - that was a low blow… But you know what? Somehow I still get by day 2 day, and if I have problems one day, I’ll hire an accountant to help me, that’s all the help I need in those daily issues. You get by, don’t you? You’re not dead yet, that’s for sure ;)

I do however have problems with getting an education, like you. But who says you HAVE to go to college to be “normal”? Most people in this world don’t go to college… What about technical schools and stuff like that? And why not find out what programs and places for people like us there is where you live?

Even IF your test is 100% accurate, you are not dumb or anything like that, anyone can read that

Tony,
Please don’t count yourself out yet.
I have several LDs such as auditory processing delay which also effects my visual processing as well as no short term memory and word finding problems. I was told that my IQ was low and in third grsde my parents were told I probably would never learn to write. I went to a 2 year tech school and got a 2 year bs degree. My daughter has APD and short term memory problems. She is going to college in an LD program where they give her some accomodations. I know it is not easy, but people with determination and the right attitude can go farther than someone who happens to be “smart.”

There is a little poem that comes to mind:

I Think I Can
If you think you are beaten you are;
If you think you dare not, you don’t;
If you want to win but think you can’t;
It’s almost a cinch you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose you’re lost;
For out of the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will;
It’s all in a state of mind.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger and faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.

Please don’t give up

[quote:9bfe6507e5=”ellyodd”]LD Man, you are NOT helping by saying that stuff. The world is not black & white.
OK then, I will try to be more positive.

Patrick, remember how great your school was with your IEP and all the accomodation they freely gave you? It only gets better. You see, employers are just fighting to hire LDers. They don’t care about profit, they care about us.

Let’s say that you fall through the crack and you can’t get hired right away because of your LD. Then you can go to those great folks at your state DVR and they will give you all the help you need. Don’t let their less than 20% succes rate of finding employment for their clients scare you. They are experts in helping LDers even though they they can’t tell you what LD is. We all know how competent government run agencies are :lol: Patrick, as an LDer your future is so bright you have to wear shades.

Yes Patrick there is soooooooooooooooo much help available to you. So remember if you end up doing a crap job all your life it is your own damn fault just like it is the fault of all the other LDers who are stuck in crap jobs.

If you do not achieve the American dream it is because you did not try hard enough and you were not positive enough.

How’s that for BS?

LD Man, I said THE WORLD IS NOT BLACK & WHITE. You go from one extreme situation to another. I feel bad for you (LD Man), that you see the world in that way, but WHY do you HAVE to share your anger like that with a person who’s just asking for a little response? I really, really can’t see what good you are doing in this situation. Shut the f*** up and let some light in. You get what you give, Rome wasnt build in a day… and other sayings like that

Oh you forgot “when life gives you lemons make lemonade” or the story about the little engine that could and of course don’t forget “when the going gets tough the tough get going”. My favorite is the one where Beethoven wrote all those symphonies while deaf. I also like the Hellen Keller one but I like the Hellen Keller jokes better.

Do you think maybe if I go see the Ray Charles movie I’ll become the next Stevie wonder.

You whould have give Christopher Reeves that advice because it think it was his bad attitude and all his clamoring for stem cell reseach that kept him a cripple and eventually killed him. If only he had believed in JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEsus he’d be alive today and winning the 100 yard dash.

Let me clue you in on something Pal, it was disabled people in wheel chair chainng themselves to federal buiding and protesting public transportation that got them the access that they have today. They did not go and play the game of calling each other “negative because they complained about getting the shaft from this largely uncaring society. Parapilegics are not in wheelchairs because of their bad attitudes and they have not gained access by lying to themselves and other by saying the reason their lives scuk is because they don’t smile and kiss enough ass.

We have a MUCH tougher row to hoe than any parapilegic. The fact that we have a hidden disablity that is largely misunderstood even by the so called experts has screwed us in ways you cannot even comprehend.When your friends star telling you about their good jobs and their nice houses and vacation and you are still woking at the car wash taking crap off some Neandertal boss look at yourself in the mirror and blame yourself before you pull the trigger!!

How dare you tell me to F off. My anger as you put IS real and it is a result of having LD and working as an advocate for others who are getting screwed by the same system that convieniently blames them for its failure.

Don’t come here and judge me because I want to tell the truth of the matter. Don’t judge me because I don’t speel the same happy horse manure you are used to hearing from the clueless people who make a living running their do nothing machine.

Let me tell you something Pal! People like me are the best friend people like you will ever have.

Come back and tell me how many moderate to severe LDers are not living below the poverty level. Tell me how many own homes. Tell me how many ADHDers and Lders are in prison And when you do all that tell me it’s there own damn fault!!!

WAKE UP MARY POPPINS!!

When did I say that this was easy? I didnt. And I DO believe we need to complain, but I do NOT believe in doing things like selling drugs and other things that affect other people. Of course I dont mind a father stealing bread, THAT would be ignorant.

I know how it is being disabled - and I have a back injury that has kept me inside since the beginning of 2002, I know what it feels like to be totally… to not be able to do anything myself. And that is why I really, really feel that the things I CAN do, I SHOULD do. You can walk and talk, right? You have access to the internet right? You have a roof over your head, right? That’s more than a lot of people. The people who end up in prison, for example. I’m a big believer in everybody being equal and that everybody should help everybody - I HAVE NEVER EVER said that “they deserve it” - that is as far away from my mind as it could be. But I dont believe in telling people that they should do criminal things that hurt other people.

I shouldnt have said f*** off, that could be misunderstood - I meant f*** of with encouraging others to be ignorant.

And you DO have the right to complain all you want - but you are complaining AND saying that you have gived up and that others should to. That is in no way being like people in wheelchairs chaining themselfes to buildings.
Don’t judge me because I don’t speel the same happy horse manure you are used to hearing from the clueless people who make a living running their do nothing machine
I have no one but myself to hear “happy horse manure” from. No one. Nope. No one there.

And I’m NOT religious, honey

I am sugesting that people give up. You are correct. They need to give up beating their heads against the wall. They need to give up on the idea that they will ever get a level playing field.

I think a reality check is in order here. Have you ever heard of VIOXX? It costs $5.00 or more a pill. It is not as effective in stopping arthritis pain as most OTC drugs that sell for pennies per dose. Oh yeah, VIOXX kills people and Merk it’s manufacturer knew that and sold it anyway. Do you think any Merk executive will be going to jail for knowing selling a lethal drug? BUT! The cops are all to willing to destroy a man’s life who is making a living selling a weed that has damn fwe hazard and many pain relieving benefits.

I will always maintain that unless and until we get a level playing field the rules do not apply.

It is often implied that we LDer are at least a litle bit at fault and then that little bit grows until the people who are charged with helping us can blame their failure on us.

Check out the parents of children with LD and ADHD on this sight and read about the crap the schools put their kids through.

I was advocating for some returning adults student at a local college. I went to several meetings with them to the students with disabilties directors office because NOTHING was being done for any of them. The BS reason I was given was because non of them had IEP (Individual Educational Plans) I asked where could they obtain an IEP and the moron told me they needed to have one when they were in highschool. Back when these people went to highscholl they didn’t have IEPs. That nasty moron knew that. She was just asserting her small amount of power and otherwise being a be itch.

She told me that one lady would not be allowed to use a recording device for taking notes and the stupid be itch told me it was because what was said in the classroom were the intelectual property rights of the school and recording any lecture would be a violation of copywrite laws. That was a lie! I wanted to punch the be itches face in. If she had been a man I might have done so. The student in question had severe arthritis in her hands and was physically unable to write.

This is typical of the stone walling I run across but when it come to adult LD students it is even more absurd. About all the students with disablities director does is hand out keys so kids in wheelchair can ride the elevator. A janitor could do that.

Essenilly there are NO programs, standards or strategies in place in the college setting for LD students. It is even worse in the real world.

BTW cortico steroid injections helped me with my back pain. I hope you feel better.

er….back on topic…

Tony,

The tests don’t change a thing really other than hopefully you can use them to come up with accomidations.

You write very intelligently…anyone who reads it can tell you have a higher IQ then the test showed.

Good luck to you in future endivers.

Tony,

If your verbal comprehension is 100 but the full scale is 86, then you have average verbal skills and low nonverbal skills. What you have to understand is coming up with an average of 86 with significant spread is not the same as having an 86 IQ without it. It means that you are quite good at some things and pretty bad at others.

How do you do at math? How are you at memorization? I am on the faculty of an university and some of the LD students do OK and some do not. Most seem to have trouble with putting information together (seeing the whole picture) but those who are good at memorization and have reasonable writing skills do well enough with some extra work. I teach management type courses so quantative issues really do not impact students in the classes I teach. But I know from other posts, they can create a whole other set of issues in college.

I also think though that it is important to separate out working at Target the rest of your life from a college education. My 11 year old son is LD. I don’t know if he will go to college. If he doesn’t, he hardly will be a failure, no more than you will be a failure. Both for him and you, sucess is finding something you like to do, which is obviously not Target for you. We all have some doors closed to us; you may have more than other people. But there are many jobs today that require some advanced training but not a college degree. No, maybe that isn’t what you hoped for, dreamed of, but it isn’t Target either.

So basically what you’re implying Beth is that someone with a low average IQ should rule out college?

Yes ofcourse I’m terrible at Math it’s my worst subject infact. I’m farily good at memorization when I want to be. I already have 37 college credit hours earned, keep in mind this is from a community college. I was told by the person who administered the test that I do have “sufficent ability needed to succeed at the post - secoundary level in selected career fields”.

I have a lot of determination to move my life forward but this evaluation has had me down in the dumps for about a year now. But if I want to get anywhere I’m going to have to suck it up and make up my mind that I’m going to do what I need to do, which is finishing my degree.

I work with this one moron who got a 1500 on the SAT, got a full schalorship to the Rochester Institue of technology, but decided that drinking was more important than studying and getting a top quality education. Now at the age of 28 he’s makes $9.00 an hour and couldn’t be more miserable. So I think motivation has a hell of a lot do with your ability to succeed in life and accomplish what you want to do.

So I’m going to keep riding that pony and focus on the road ahead and wave my middle finger at the world as I do. No one is going to tell me that I can’t do something because of some number, not David Wechsler, not my parents, or anyone else for that matter.

Tony,

No, you misunderstood me. You may have a low average IQ on paper but because you are LD with considerable spread in your scores, the full scale score doesn’t adequately capture your abilities. And I am sure, regardless, that some people who are not LD with low average IQs do complete college.

From your description, fulfilling the math requirement for a 4 year degree is likely to be your biggest challenge. If you have been able to satisfy your math requirements for a college degree at the community college, then really don’t let a score on a test stand in your way. Use the knowledge you gained from the evaluation to major in a field that will use your strengths and minimize the effects of your weaknesses. Truly, that is all any of us can do. And the fact that you are determined and work hard makes a tremendous difference.

And if you haven’t fullfilled the math requirement, I would not transfer until you are able to do so. Math will be harder at a four year college and, for you, this is just an obstacle you must overcome to get to what you want to do.

And you are right, a lot of very book smart people waste their talent.

Beth
