add and sld

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

my child has just been diagnosed with add she already has an iep for an sld. her case manger wants to changes the iep to say multiple disabilities instead of just sld since she know has two dianogisis. Is this right? I thought that multiple disability was a category for more server inpederments.

So did I. I would check out a support/advocacy group in your area. I think strictly speaking it would be a multiple disability, but I don’t evne think it gets classified as duo-dx. or something like that. It is so common for the two to be linked, seems strange to consider this a multiple disabiltiy. I’d be afraid you might get caught up in something that it would be hard to get out of. Don’t sign anything til you find out more.

Before putting down MD I would suggest OHI. The SLD is occuring because of her primary diagnosis ADD and that would qualify her as OHI, not a multiple disability. Now that she is on MEDS things may click for her and then she may not qualify as SLD when her next review comes up. But she would qualify as OHI considering her medical diagnosis of ADD.

If the first diagnois was SLD would that be the primary dianogsis?

Specific Learning Disability exists when there is a discrepancy between achievement verbal IQ and performance IQ. Until she is requalified at her next triennial her current diagnosis of SLD can stand.

However, what I was saying still holds true.. The ADD is what caused the SLD and now that the ADD is being treated the SLD will probably start to subside. When she is retested and if she DOESN”T qualify as SLD then she can qualify as OHI Other Health Impaired because she has a diagnosed Neurological MEDICAL condition (ADD).

I would definitely want her qualified as OHI if I was her parent because she does not have multiple disabilities such as an orthopedic, visual, hearing, down syndrome, autism, etc..

For instance my daughter qualifes under DHH because she has a Hearing impairment. She also has been diagnosed with CAPD, ADHD and SLD but her main qualifying condition is the root of her other issues DHH and we did not put her down as having multiple disabilities because she isn’t Severely Handicapped.
