I don't know if I can do much else..

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

What that means is I work nights at a Wal-Mart, and I want to give college a shot, but night stocking is very frustrating to me. And other people who notice my frustration tell me that if I can’t handle a simple job like stocking, how could I handle a profesional job. It aint easy being LD now a days is it?

Seth even though Wal-Mar pays below a living wage at least they hired you.

College will probably not work out for you but you should at least give it a shot. Psychology or social would be a good field. It pays Ok and any idiot can do it. Actually idiots do well in those fields.

A vocational school may be a better choice bu don’t become an auto mechanic. I’d rather have a crack head working on my brakes than an LDer. I don’t mean that as a put down to you but you know how it is stocking shelves and putting stuff in the wrong place.

Welding pays OK but even with that you may need to be supervised especially if you are working with gas welding. Electric is much safer.

You need to look at the reality of the situation. You proabaly have gotten next to no help with your LD. Right? The only person that has been any real help to you is you. Right? With that in mind maybe you should look into self employment.

I know a guy who has a window washing business and he is doing OK. Pressure washing rich people’s houses can be lucrative. There can be some fringe benefits to working for rich people. ;-) Hubby is out of town a lot ;-)

Seth, you need to be creative and accomodate yourself in the way you need to be accomodated. LDer do not fair well in the job market so self employment may be a worthwhile option.

DON’T fall for some selfemployment scam you see on TV of some Amway type crap. Come up with your own thing.

Like that person who thought his life was over.”Goodbye cruel world” Why not just put a bag over your head for the rest of your life because you say you won’t amount to anything?

As they say. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Just because you have LD doesn’t mean you can’t go on with your life or not go to college. Did you even give it a try?

No, what you have, or should I say all have is this gift, that’s right LD is actually a gift!

But if you don’t like college, don’t go. But I know you’ll be making a big mistake. Like the poster above said, self employment may be your best bet. Have you tried something in the entertainment industry maybe?

Oh and speaking of LD, I now hear there’s medication for this? And that LD is sometimes tied to depression I hear. This is just my opinion and is not a fact, but I think although these pills get rid of your depression or LD you become a horribly lame person without realizing it. Those Zoloft (or whatever it’s called) commercials are proof. Then before you know it, you start enjoying Phil Collins’ albums and Bob Villa infomercials and in like a year you trade in your Ferrari for a Volkswagon bug and drive it everyday! You start cutting everyone off and everyone around you will think you’re some kind of a freak but you don’t care. You’ll honk the horn like an as.sclown without a care in the world because you’re on medication. In fact, I even think that poor kid on that top banner took something. Look at him! He is so wanting to beat himself a bit deep inside. So yeah no anti-depressants or other medicines for ADD or LD etc…EVER for me. Never touched them never will. It’s a conspiracy. They just want your money.. So I guess my point is, your better off without these.

And if you’re still not convinced.
Look at this!( I made that a few years back. It speaks for itself)

http://www.geocities.com/vanbascos/banner8.txt

Learn to express your thought with your LD and live with it like we all do. People with LD(unless intensely dangerous) depending the kind it is, are one of the most interesting and more creative persons out there so please don’t let it go to waste…….And….lastly……………….
Walmart is evil! Why are you working there anyway? They are about big government, big business, big media, and big academia block your road to financial freedom and tell you that it’s for your own good. And are probably behind some type of World Domination organization. This new Wal-mart that opened up in my neighborhood put a local toy store out of business. I was crushed! I grew up with that store. Now after 20 years it’s gone, and soon to be replaced with a Fed Ex store!! A Fed Ex store to buy boxes! It’s like they didn’t even try.

Before reaching out for help with LD be very careful who you choose. Some doctors are nothing but scam artists and others, even teachers will be out there to change who you are, and brainwash you just for the money. I’ve seen them around my neighborhood, I know who they are.

I’d really would like to hear from you again. I have (VSL) or “Visual Spatial Learner” a type of dyslexia but we’ll all float on ok.

“night stocking is very frustrating to me”

For you and most of the people who have ever tried it. A few people like the night shift and working pretty much by themselves.

I hated the 1.5 years I worked at McDonalds, but money was money and then I went to college (and worked summers trimming trees for 2x what McD’s paid.)

Take a class somewhere. See what you think. Good luck.

Listen to merlinjones, seth. You work as a stocker. Who cares! When you recieve your paycheck, does the electric company refuse your money because it came from stocking shelves at Wal Mart? Heck no! Who cares what you do for a living, now. The question you should be asking yourself is what would you like to be doing four or even ten years from now. If you wish to attend college, then give it a shot. Take a reduced corse load your first two semesters and work your way up to full time study. No one is going to care what you do for a living when you are at college. Keep tht to yourself and just see what you can do. And do not listen to this vocational outlook for l.d. folks is bleak crap. That is negative talk. Remember, you and you alone have to power to control your own destiny, not anyone else.

Yes and I suppose that your life experience with either having LD or dealing with people with LD, speaks for the whole LD population?

You talk as if you are representing a large mass of people and that your advice is the only andvice people should listen to.

The sooner you accept the fact that your life, where you live, and in your state doesn’t represent all people who have LD. The sooner you may realize that the truth you are telling people isn’t everyones reality.

The occupational outlook for most yong people ages 18-30 is very bleak these days. You can no longer walk into a secure job like you could 20/30 years ago. So it’s not just people who have ld that are having a problem finding a good job, it’s everyone!

And ld is pretty vague, there are a lot of disabilities out there. some people arn’t college material, and some won’t be able to get a profesional job.

So the next time you reply in a thread or post one why don’t you specify what kind of LD it is that people have that won’t be able to get on a level playing field. But to say the occupational outlook for all LDers is bleak. Is almost as dumb as spending time arguing with some one on a message board.

Tom — I do hope you are in fact a real person, and not one of the “guest“ ‘s multiple personalities.
This person is so lacking in a life that he has to post under many pseudonyms and start fights with himself when nobody else will play his self-hatred game. If he weren’t so hurtful to others you could feel sorry for him.

There’s an old children’s ditty that starts:
Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, think I’ll go and eat some worms …

Some people make a life choice to eat worms. Until they decide for themselves that there might be some other things out there in the world, you can’t do much with them.
It’s similar to AA, where they feel that a person has to hit bottom before they can start to get better.

Other people, apparently including you (I do hope you’re real), don’t particularly care for sitting in the mud eating worms. Good!

Almost everyone on this board is here to try to improve lives, definitely not to play a hard game of Ain’t It Awful. This particular very obsessive person has chosen this board as a target and makes a lot of posts — really does need to get a life — but he is not representative of the community.

It is best to simply ignore the hurtful posts and just carry on a reasonable conversation around them.

If the person descends (as he often does) to personal insults, obscenity, advocating violence, or advocating criminal acts, then please report the post to the moderators — copy it, then click the LDOnline button at the top left of the page, then click pm, and send it in.

FWIW, according to the census data I have, that income number you’re quoting is HOUSEHOLD income, not individual income.

I don’t think any group is getting everything they need - not Deaf people, persons with quadriplegia, persons with traumatic brain injuries, persons who are blind, individuals with multiple sclerosis, …well it’s a long, long list and money and cures are few and far between.

So you might be right about some things, but I believe you are making a mistake by leading with your attitude and alienating people. Verbally blasting people might make you feel better, but in my experience it doesn’t accomplish much in the long run. I realize that my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it. ;)
