What are some good ways to teach LD students to pronounce words?

Hmmm…. more information needed… what is the problem with pronunciation? Or do you mean pronounce words being read? How old? (Or is this an assignment for a class… in which case consult your friendly neighborhood textbook :-))

Modeling is the first & most natural approach. I say it, you say it.

Your students might be having difficulty pronouncing the words, because they are having difficulty decoding the words.

Teach them to concretely and multi-sensorily decode the words they are having difficulty pronouncing. Then they will be able to correctly pronounce the sound spellings, which will be connected to the actual spellings.

Email me if you would like me to send you letters I exchanged with other teachers about this problem. Anita www.learntoreadnow.com

Students need the preskills necessary for applying the flexible decoding strategies such as oral activities with blending word parts into words, vowel combinations and conversions. reading word parts at the beginning and end of words, underlining vowel sounds in words, then reading the whole words. There are a lot of research based reading programs. one in particular is REWARDS authors : Anita Archer, Mary Gleason, and Vicky Vachon. It’s an excellent word attack and rate development strategies proven for students to read multisyllabic words. I’ve used it and it really works !!!
