My nephew is 17, has mild LD, and lives in New Mexico. He isn’t learning a whole lot at high school. Can someone suggest how he could get vocational education or training to help him get a job?

There is no help for LDers besides the help they can get for themselves. It would be nice if trade schools were set up to accomodate LDers but that is not usually the case. So much for the Americans with Disabilties Act. :(
He may have to rely on the kindeness of others in the private sector in order to get the help he requires. If he tries to use the eductional system he will only get frustrated.

If I may ask, what kind of LD does he have. Most young adults I know with LD continue on to some type of post secondary education. Also, its not too late to push for a better program for him at school.
We have had a rash of folks lately who have been confusing LD (learning disability) with MR (mental retardation or delayed development). I just want to make sure you’re on the correct board. (Sorry)
Since your newphew has an LD I am assuming he has an IEP at school? The school is required to address transitional (ie transitioning from school to post school) plans during his annaul IEP meeting starting at age 14. They should know the local options. If they have not done so, I would definately consider calling and IEP meeting immediately.
