I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of where to get preschool materials or activities for LD preschoolers.
I have a 3 yr old son Nate, who was recently diagnosed with expressive-receptive disorder and echolalia. While he scored within normal limits on the assessment the speech therapist noted a “moderate” expressive-receptive disorder. He is very visual and had ALOT of difficulty with any type of communication unless there were visuals. He will be starting speech therapy 2x weekly and is going to be evaluated next week to rule out any autism spectrum disorders. On his therapy days he’ll be home with me and I would like to have some one-on-one time to work with him myself. His daycare is wonderful, they take them on all types of field trips, to the zoo, police station, library, pool, etc. so he is being exposed to alot of different things, but I was wondering about activities that I could do with him that maybe helped with his expressive speech, conversation, descriptions of things……..Does that sound right? I’m sure his therapist will have some ideas too, but I have a feeling that I am going to be the one that will have to help him academically. While his school is wonderful for lots of things, I want to be the one to teach him and help him not rely on the teachers there. The teachers there are great with the kids, but he is one of the few (like 3 out of 40 kids) with a learning disability and they aren’t trained to teach him. He frustrates them because he has such trouble with following directions. They are starting to use pictures and examples to get him to do activities and have had alot of success, but I’m his mom and although I feel that speech is going to help tremendously, at 2x weekly I feel that if there is anything more that I can be doing, I will.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! He knows all of his colors, shapes, numbers and some letters so hopefully there is something out there to work with! Thanks so much!
If you send me a message, I could email you something. I work with a young kid with delayed language and articulation problems. I have homework that I sent to the mom and it sounds like some of this might be relevant to your needs.
If you have never sent a message, just click on my name and then it will be possible to send me one.
