Assessments

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a parent of a SLD child LA/Math she is now having her testing done for her tri-annual. The IEP is in about 10 days from now and after looking at the results from the WJ3 cognitive I believe she will test out. Not good because even though her IQ is high enough her WJ3 academic is what qualifies her. She needs extra testing like the CTOPPS. The district won’t do it. What qualifications do you need in order to administer this test? SLD the S stands for specific (right???) according to the WJ3 cognitive it is not pin pointing what the specific learning disorder is. This is what I want to know. Visual —auditory what ??? How can I get these answers?

I think that you need to have what all testing that has been done evaluated by a proper doctor. It is far out to think that your youngster has a specfic learning disability that is not defined…unless your youngster has a ld not otherwise specialised. I really think that you need to get what all teating that has been done looked at by a proper doctor. Then you fight for the other testing. Also, who said your youngster needed the other testing? Her doctor?

Are you saying that her achievement scores have improved to a level thatt you think will mean she no longer qualifies? It is great if she has shown progress. What services has she been getting and what do you believe she still needs? What are the current reading and math scores?

It sounds like her specific learning disabilities have been identified in the areas of reading and math. So you would still have to show a deficit in those areas to qualify. Has she met her goals for this year in those areas? What were the goals?

specifically geared towards her phonological processing and language skills TheCTOPP is given by SLP’s and I am not sure if the psyches do it or not. I have been going round and round with psyches and kids…specifically those who are testing out…if the kid is testing out and there is no 22 point split between IQ and achievement then they pull me in to see if I can find a language disability if the kids are testing out…If I can’t find anything chances are it is time to cut the cord and see how they do with just support at home and six months transition out.
