Hi. I have a son with processing speed problems and add inattentive. I am already planning on having him do Interactive metronome as a first attempt to help him. After that, would the PACE program be helpful?
Has anyone seen benefits to processing speed and/or attention from this? I see there is a provider in my area.
Thanks!
Re: Anyone use the Pace program for processing speed?
Thanks, Beth. I’m not sure if my son’s problems are cognitive or motor based. I lean toward cognitive. He has fine hand - eye coordination at video games, but he’s not big into sports. The educational testing showed that he has a great hard drive but has trouble getting the info through his “printer”.
Anyway, I guess I’ll check with the doctors about which he would be.
About The Listening Program - My son has great comprehansion of a story read out loud but cannot follow oral instructions. Would it help him with that?
Thanks again,
KarenO
Re: Anyone use the Pace program for processing speed?
Karen,
Sometimes it is hard to piece all of this together except in retrospect. The not following directions could be due to auditory memory or it could be attention, for example. With my son, I think there is some of both, although he is much better than he used to be.
What were his pretest scores with IM? That could give you a clue as to motor involvement. My son’s scores originally were so low that the recommendation was to do some other therapy first. We did Neuronet and then went back to IM. His scores were still out of the normal range but were much improved.
Handwriting issues most often have a motor component.
Another way to guess is to look at IQ testing and see if processing involving motor was lower than processing without motor involvement.
I do know people who have had success with PACE, which is why I did it. Others, like myself, have not. My advice, if you want to maximize chances of success is this. Do The Listening Program before PACE and perhaps before IM. I have heard this most strongly before PACE but some have said before Im. We had already done TLP so I didn’t look into it much before doing IM. Now if you do the pretest for PACE and he scores normal in the auditory processing part, TLP probably isn’t necessary.
And as you suggest, I would do IM before PACE.
PACE offers free testing and I certainly would do that before deciding.
Beth
Hi again,
We did PACE also but really didn’t see the kind of benefits I had hoped for. My son was younger than yours (8) and I think that was a problem, although I spoke extensively to the PACE people at headquarters and they said no.
PACE is a cognitively based program and it is clear that my son’s processing problems are motor based. PACE has a motor component but it wasn’t gradual enough for my son. At times, he couldn’t even do the lowest level.
Now we did PACE before IM, which was a mistake. And we did PACE before we did The Listening Program, which was also a mistake. My son has auditory processing problems as well as ADD and he was seriously challenged by the auditory processing component of PACE.
