Every parent with a child with LD should watch this video. Every teacher and principal, should see this video/DVD. This is one of the best selling educational videos and there is a reason.
For those of you who don’t know it, the new one call Beyond F.A.T. City is now out. It is good but don’t watch it until you have seen the first one.
I will be writing a letter to my superintendent to encourage every school in my district to show this to each staff and I encourage you to do the same. Hey folks, if we don’t speak up, who will? There are thousands of kids who we can touch if we do this. Write a letter if you agree.
I in no way work for Rick Lavoie. Please, go to your public library if you have not seen this video.
This year I showed this video to a couple LD students’ parents. This was huge. The parents were most grateful for this video. One parent told me, “I wish I had seen this 5 years ago.” She watched it with her husband and gifted older brother. Life has been so hard for this family. This video really helped them to understand so many things. I believe it will change their family dynamics, in a postive way.
I have talked to my principal. I went to the International Dyslexia Foundatation here in Arizona. They are going to loan me the kit to do the simulation at my school. This might be an option where you live.
There are teachers and parents who don’t understand LD. Hey, even myself, who is a dedicated teacher learned from this video. It makes you see the LD kid in a different light. If I had enough money, I’d buy this video for every school in America. I don’t. But, being the optimist that I am, I’m hoping I can open a few more eyes by spending 5 minutes to type this post. If you do watch the video and like it maybe you can spend 5 minutes telling someone too. Ya never know how many lives could be touched by this.
One person on this earth can change the world. You, whoever is reading this, can make a difference in a life of a kid. Most teachers are well meaning but still, I’m telling you they could benefit from this video.
If you have watched this video, please comment. I don’t want people to think I’m just making this up.
You can buy the video or go the public library.
Please, if you like the video, encourge every principal you know to show it to their staff. SPread the word for all those LD kids who don’t have the words to explain how hard school is. Sometimes our words break kids’ spirits. This video will be a positive experience for almost everyone who watches it.
Thanks and rent the video if you haven’t already. The first video is old and has been out for years, but is still very relevant. The new video just came out.

Re: Must see F.A.T. City Video on LD
Michelle,
I have heard of this video and even saw a couple of minutes of it at a conference one time. But I have never seen the whole thing. I trust you because we choose so many of the same teaching methods and materials! So I’ll be ordering it!
And thank you LD Online for offering us a discount! That is really nice of you, because some of us spend far too much on teaching materials and trainings as it is! Every little bit helps!

must see video
I am just a mom and I ran to my public library as soon as I read about this video. I was so happy to see we had it. I watch it as soon as I got home. Within the first 5 mins. my husband walk in. When I do researse he always shakes his head and walks out.
Not this time he sat down and watch the whole thing. Yes that is a big deal. For the first time he understood his sister, brother and son. He told me I had to give this to the school which he usually gets mad when I talk to the school about my son.
Right after the movie he called his mother and told her how amazed he was.
I am very glad I saw this movie. You think you understand what being dyslexia could be like. After this video you will unerstand it.
Every parent and teacher should watch this video. It showed me how I can help him more with homework. I so would like to show this to his teacher. Then she would understand why he runs out of her class looking for someone - anyone.
Please watch this video
Re: Must see F.A.T. City Video on LD
They need to lower the price if they want the average parent or teacher to be able to afford it. $50 is a steep price for a video or DVD.

I found a copy at my local public library. Check here first. If they do not have it ask to fill out a request form and consider buying the video when their next buget comes in.
Re: Must see F.A.T. City Video on LD
Michelle,
I hope to have a couple of evening LD parent support group meetings next school year. Do you think the first video is adequate or would it be better to present one and then the other at the next meeting?
I am also interested in the Mel Levine “Mastering the Challenge of Reading” video set, but I’d like to hear from someone who has seen those. He has put out a very extensive set of videos, but I hate to spend the money before I hear some reviews.

Showing the video at parent night
Janis,
I’d show one and see how it goes. It’s long. It’s about 70 minutes or so. I’d show one and then have a discussion. I’d see how the group responds. I think most parents are going to want to see the next one. There is something special about the first video.
I kind of wish the first video F.A.T. City had one video that was a bit condensed so that it could fit in a staff meeting better.
I just got my videos from ldonline.org. I was able to get one of the board members at my district to preview them this weekend. YES, I’m so grateful to work in a district with people who care about what I think is important. I should hear from her next week. My hope is to get this shown at every school in our huge distrtict. That would be huge. Who knows if this dream would happen.
Another instructional aide at my school (who has an LD kiddo at home) took the video home this week. She loved it. She showed it to her neighbor, an LD teacher. The LD teacher (another district) wants to show it to her staff. This aide has told other teachers how great the video was. Now other teachers are asking to take it home all from her testimonial. Word of mouth is working but the teachers who need to see it the most won’t be asking for it. This is why I’d like it to be forced if you know what I mean. (i.e. principal shows it)
I don’t know the answer to your question. I’m thinking that after you show the first video, you’ll get the reaction from the group and will know how to proceed. The thing is parents who have kids are all at different stages of understanding. Even within the family one parent may be at a different stage then the other.
Let me know what happens. I’d like to do the same next year. I actually bought the DVD version hoping to check it out to parents for a few days at a time. I’m not sure how many parents I could get to show up for a meeting. Sending the video/DVD home (district copy) has worked but when I told the district I was sending it home the check out lady got mad. (the district copy) She said that they are for teachers and if they lose it I’d get in trouble. That’s when I decided to just buy my own.
I hope I answered your question.

Re: Must see F.A.T. City Video on LD
Thanks, Michelle. It is very hard here to get the principals to require a video like that. My school was using Reading Mastery and not requiring new staff to be trained in a READING program! Now that’s pretty sad!
I am going to offer the video(s) at my church one evening and advertise it as a free LD Parent Support meeting. That way homeschoolers and others could come, too.
I agree that 70 minutes is a bit long…45 would have been better. But since it is so good, I hope people won’t mind. I just have to decide whether to buy one or both while we have the discount!

Re: Must see F.A.T. City Video on LD
I ask the councilor in my son school if she would watch this video. She said she had never seen it but heard about it. she agreed that it is a helpful video and well she is going on materity leave for the first few months of school next year but she said she is going to add it to her training material. Hope her helper will show it this summer during training. It is a start. I even told a friend with a ld child and she plans on renting it often as a refresher. I put in a request at the library for the beyond video.
I am a visual person and watching this video really helped me understand more. I cant tell you how many books I have read.
Re: Must see F.A.T. City Video on LD
I am hear again. I am such a fan of this video as you can tell.
I ask my library to purshase the new video Beyond F.A.T. City. It also help me. It felt a little longer. Yes it is longer but it felt longer. There is more discussion but it is still powerful. The summary at the end of each chapter was very good.
This video touch on a lot of social issues that come with a learning disability/differences. It help me put words to the things I can been trying to explain to my son’s teacher all year and she could not grasp. She would look at me like I was making excuses for my son that did not exsist.
This video is good in helping to understand the social effects.
Another must see DVD. I am going to suggest this video to the school as well.
Thank god for the marshmellow teahcers but they still need to feel success in the classroom as well.
