Looking for a Good Sumer Camp

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am looking for a summer camp within 200 miles of New York City for my 8 year old son. Specifically, we are searching for a sleepaway camp with a part academic part regular camp program. Our son is highly gifted but has a diagnosed, albeit mild, learning disability.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

If you don’t get a good answer here (maybe nobody knows one). I suggest you do a websearch using “camps” +”special needs” in google.
Also you can look up ACA (american camping association). They have had a database where you can put any sort of perimeters into it and get an answer. I found two very good camps for my nephew that way a no. of years ago. (Unfortunately one is in Wisc. and the other in CA).

I did do an Internet search using Google and couldn’t come up with anything in the area (defined as a six-hour driving radius from New York City). I also had a summer camp consultant— I was surprised that there were such things— and got nothing from that either. The only suitable camp I can find is The Learning Camp but they are located in Colorado. I will try that summer camp association you mentioned and also perhaps start looking for airfare deals to Denver.

Thanks for the response.

You may wish to look at the summer camp program at the Gow School in South Wales, New York.

Well you might have to look in the region vs. state, though I am sure there are other camps besides Gow. Also the local ld school may have a summer program which combines regular camp/ recreation activities with school activities. You might look for Summit school— I think that’s in Penn??
