:o I’m in a school district that really isn’t educated on modifying any work. My son’s IEP calls for modification in spelling, science,etc any reading courses. He has special ed teachers in class supporting teacher and him. I finally got the spelling test modified to 20 words for his test each week. He’s in 4th grade. Struggling to finish his assignments each day. So they send the unfinished work home along with homework and I teach him. It’s actually better than 1st half of year I taught him all subjects every night and complained bitterly and had a meeting because I really felt he must not be doing anything in school if so much work sent home. Well 3(regular ed)put to special Ed teachers sat at the meeting and showed me how my son would sit or say not sit in class and not focus and felt bad for him. Because I didn’t have him on medicine yet thought he would cry if they called me to let me know. Of course now he is behind because I was furious that a child could be allowed to sit in a class and do nothing for 4 months. They main teacher feels bad but doesn’t know that modifications means leveling the education field for a child that has processing and focus problems to help their self-confidence and self-esteem. Regular Education teachers in my son’s school need training in modifications in the inclusive class and dealing with children and parents of special ed children. They need to realize parents are not attacking teachers we are concerned about educating our children to their best ability.Let’s teach teachers to modify assignments and not be ditto Queens and account for each graded assignment. Does anyone have a good program for this?
My best advise is to go to your library and check out the video F.A.T.City by Rick Lavoie. This is the best video for this. Watch it yourself if you haven’t. The new video is out as well that is the follow up.
