test results not what i expected

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

i received the results of the wisc iv and they seem normal - all except the vocabulary which is extremely low.. looking at the results show no sign of a ld.. the results have surprised me a lot to be honest..
the other tests given show that there might be a high probability she may be adhd - browns and aseba..
i always thought that because she can be exceptional with little effort and yet pay so little attention and concentration that she would of scored higher.. when she focuses she does very well, when she doesn’t, the hole isn’t deep enough..

where does one go now?? how accurate are the browns and aseba tests??
she scored pretty high in both..

I”m not familiar with the brown & aseba tests. I would say, though, that if she is ADHD then it could bring down the IQ score the same way it brings down her performance on other things if she’s not focused. (There are also a million other reasons for a depressed IQ score, though for most of the reasons, interestingly enough, it’s the Vocabulary score that tends to stay high if others are depressed by, say, depression.)
Were there other tests done? Does she struggle more with some tasks than others, or is focus the universal challenge? Were there other relative highs & lows in the subtest scores?

hi sue,

no highs or lows, just a poor performance on vocabulary.. even the psyche was surprised.. psyche said that dd started really well but lost concentration and started responding very impulsively.. focus for longer than 10 minutes is a major achievement..

the wiat ii was also done - i don’t have the raw scores on that but from what i know she did very well on the mathematical part and i’m not too sure on the comprehension yet..

then again, dd has been known to be an extremist - either excellent or not.. there very is little ground..

the brown test ‘BADDS’ is a test for ADHD - no inconsistencies there i’m afraid

I agree with Sue that untreated ADHD certainly will ususally have a negative effect on IQ scores. So the memory composite was at 100 or above?

Some people here go to a neurologist who specializes in ADHD to follow-up. Some just go to the child’s regular doctor with the information and let him prescribe medication, if indicated. I am not familiar with the tests you have mentioned, but almost always parents and teachers are given a checklist of symptoms to fill out (like Conner’s, etc.).
