I'm stuck!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

(No need to reply, Jerry),

I’m stuck! I lost my job and now I’m stuck. I am to scared to move forward now. I really don’t know what to do. I know I have to get a new job, and I will. But my self esteem has been destroyed. I just don’t know what to do. I am not going to collect no checks. I am considering some sort of rehabilitation, if I need it.

The strange thing is, if you were to meet me you would not consider me learning disabled. After time you might think I am strange, or nervous.

I don’t know anymore.
Just venting. Thanks

Jerry, I’d strongly recommend you contact LandmarkEducation.com and enroll in the four-day Landmark Forum.
It will totally transform the way you think about your life.
The fee is well worth what you’ll take home with you.

On the basis of other posts of yours that I’ve read, I feel that your perceived learning disability is only a small part of the overall blockage you experience.

Disclaimer: I have no commercial interest in Landmark. I simply know firsthand the benefits that helped me to turn my life around.

Have you looked through What Color is Your Parachute? It’s got some really excellent exercises for looking at your skills & strengths & figuring out how to present yourself (and think of yourself) as a valuable employee, which really helps in rebuilding the ol’ self-esteem. (There’s a new edition every year but any version is good.)

By the way, my name is not Jerry. :D

Hi Sue,
I was told about What Color is YOur Parachute some ten years ago. I purchased the book and still have it somewhere.
Of course, my short attention span was a problem, so I did not finish it.

I’m beyong that book now. I know what I want to do. I love what I do. I have been through years of counceling, and am finally where I want to be in life.

I’m using my God given talents (although it’s not much) to make a living. I’m making decent money for the first time in my life. And this is why it is so hard.

I have failed, yet again, at my job. I loved what i did. Yet I failed. I had success at the job, but in the end I was let go. Why? Same as my other jobs; speed.

I wonder if my problem is not depression. I go through this feeling of “what’s the use…” This is for another thread.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Donna, you may very well have a point. But I would like you to elaborate, if you wouldn’t mind.

Ooops! A thousand apologies for the faux pas, LG.

I’m just getting ready to leave for work, so can’t elaborate right now on my experience with Landmark. But if you explore the various links on the site I’m sure you’ll find useful information.

Donna, it doesn’t have anything to do with Scientology, does it? It’s just a guess. There’s an aweful lot to read.

Nope, nothing at all to do with Scientology or with any other religion/cult/sect. If it did I wouldn’t have had anything to do with it.

Yes, there’s a lot of reading, but take the sections slowly, one at a time.
Or if there’s a centre near you, simply make an appointment to go and find out more. Then you can determine how/whether it might benefit you.

How about est? Did I guess right? Do I win anything? ;)

Okay, now I’ve googled the following up at random: “Werner Erhard’s legacy lives on in a kinder, gentler and lucrative version of his self-help seminars”

I remembered it somehow. It’s a miracle.

And lookie here at what I found…

“Landmark Forum began in 1985 by those who had purchased the est “technology” from Werner Erhard. In 1991 the group changed its name to Landmark Education Corporation (LEC), which continues to offer the Landmark Forum training, along with several other programs emphasizing communication and productivity. Erhard’s brother, Harry Rosenberg, heads LEC, which does some $50 million a year in business and has attracted some 300,000 participants. LEC is headquartered in San Francisco, as was est, and has 42 offices in 11 countries. Apparently, however, Erhard is not involved in the operation of LEC.

LEC is aimed at New Age explorers of the 1990s, not the Flower Children from the 60s and 70s who were attracted to est. The search for “It”, which characterized est, is out. Also out is the Zen master approach of est, which was often abusive, profane, demeaning and authoritarian. The Forum is apparently just as authoritarian as est but not as profane or abusive.

LEC aims to help people transform their lives by teaching them specific communication and life skills along with some heavy philosophical training. The advertised goals of LEC seem very grand and very vague.”

John, Landmark has seen a lot of positive changes since its inception. ;)

And I can assure you, the goals are anything but vague. Unless of course you consider qualities like clarity, insight, integrity and compassion in real-life, concrete situations to be vague.

I don’t agree that the Forum is aimed at 90s New Age explorers.
In the Landmark Forum that I attended other members included artists, medical and legal professionals, a judge in the Dutch High Court, business people, a martial arts instructor, teachers, social workers, and a whole range of people from all professions, trades and walks of life. Many of them had been abused as children (physically, emotionally, sexually) and had learning difficulties in school. Among Forum attendees were also unemployed individuals as well as married couples or partners wanting to determine how best to resolve difficulties in their relationships.

By the end of the Forum every single one of these people had been able to make an effective change in their perspectives and a breakthrough in situations that were blocking their confidence and creativity.

I also learned about another Forum which had been attended by a man undergoing psychotherapy. He’d been keen to do the course, but was permitted to do so only if his therapist could be present. At the end of the Forum, not only was that man able to recognise and to begin to deal with certain lifelong negative behaviour patterns, but the psychologist was so impressed with what he’d observed that he enrolled himself in the next Forum. His words to the Forum leader were something like “In four days, my patient has come further than in the last five years of regular therapy.”

Those anecdotes remind me of the stories told about tent revivals. ;) Of course a good tent meeting has better music than est ever did.

And that reminds me…it’s been a long time since I’ve seen Burt Lancaster in Elmer Gantry. Great movie.

They’re both fruits though.

“Landmark Education Corporation has worked hard to cast off the shadow of Erhard, who was a magnet for bad press. Born John Paul Rosenberg in Philadelphia, he rebirthed himself at 25, when, as a used-car salesman with four kids and a wife, he disappeared. He surfaced in San Francisco, rechristened with German-intellectual panache as Werner Erhard, and began to search the fledgling human potential movement. With a salesman’s instincts, Erhard recognized the appeal his approach to self-help would have for this paisley-coated city, and held the first “EST” seminar (Erhard Seminars Training and “it is” in Latin) in 1971 for nearly a thousand people. EST came to epitomize the ’70s encounter group, attended by hundreds of thousands including John Denver, Valerie Harper, Cher, and Yoko Ono. In 1985, he replaced EST with the less confrontational, slightly shorter, more user-friendly Forum.”

Is Werner still alive and living in Hawaii? That’s where he went after his numerous legal difficulties and after he gave the Forum to his son.

Intriguing response, John, though wholly irrelevant in terms of what Landmark does today
