self-advocacy

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I am a Special Education teacher (soon to be school counselor) in Ohio. I have attended a number of TACCLD conferences and continue to look for ways to better prepare college-bound students with learning disabilities for life after high school. I am currently developing a curriculum for these students that will promote/develop self-advocacy and self-efficacy.

Are you aware of any high schools that offer such a curriculum?

Are you aware of existing resources about developing or implementing a self-advocacy curriculum?

I have taught self-advocacy skills for years to my high school resource students, with a hodge-podge of materials I picked up from wherever I could find them. I was recently trained in the Univ. of Kansas Self-Advocacy strategy, part of their Learning Strategies curriculum and I highly recommend it. I plan to use it this year at the beginning of the year. You have to be trained to get the materials but you can check with your district to see if there are trainers in your area. I’m sure you can also check with the University. I don’t have their info right in front of me, but you can email me and I will get it for you. Good luck…teaching self-advocacy is perhaps the single best thing you can do for adolescents with learning disabilities.
