Hi,
Has anyone ever heard of this program? Does it work and how different is it from other O-G based programs?
Re: Phonographix
Phono-Graphix is very well known on these boards and at the homeschooling boards at http://www.vegsource.com
Although every reading program worth its salt owes something to O-G, PG is not an OG-based program. It tends to be very effective with both LD and non-LD children, and much faster than other methods. Although a few children seem to need more than PG (perhaps Lindamood-Bell, or O-G), PG has a very high success rate.
Rod just make an excellent post about PG (might be under the heading of Reading Reflex) on one of these boards (maybe this one?). It would be well worth looking up.
Reading Reflex is the book written for parents who want to tutor a child using the Phono-Graphix method. It’s an excellent introduction to the research, philosophy and theory behind the method, and also tells a parent exactly how to use it with a child.

Re: Phonographix
One of the biggest differences between PG and OG is speed. OG emphasizes teaching skills until they’re automatic and builds in a lot of review and practice. This is exactly the missing piece for some kids — and frankly, for a lot more kids than I would have thought until I had followed kids through three or four years. On the other hand, PG focuses right in on making the sound-letter connection, and gets the kid reading and practicing it quickly. OG programs have lots and lots of structured practice using multisensory techniques for every skill; some of the OG programs go further, too, and include writing and comprehension. There are many kids who really benefit from the really systematic structure, for spelling especially. LIndamood-Bell incorporates a lot of Socratic methods into the direct instruction, which I really like, but Readign REflex doesn’t cost bunches for materials and training.
Does it work? Often. For everybody? No. Same with OG :)
Greetings debbie d,
Phono-graphix has been discussed on this board and on the Parenting LD board many times. I would encourage you to click on the search feature for both of these boards and type in the keywords Phonographix, Phono-graphix and PG using all dates in order to read the many discussions.
Blessings, momo
