I am looking for a hand-held device, approximately the size of a remote control that is used to scan a word and then pronounce that word for the student. I saw it advertised in the LDA Newsbriefs as well as at the LDA National Convention a few years ago, but can’t seem to locate any info on it at this time. Anyone have info?
Re: Quicktionary
I have to agree with Sue. I purchased one a year or so ago for my son. It’s expensive, but we thought it would encourage him to look up words he did not understand and improve his vocabulary. However, his fine motor skills aren’t great, and he had trouble scanning the words most of the time. It is a little tricky to use. The purchase was not a total loss, however. My high school age daughter thinks it’s cool and she keeps it on her night table for bed time reading!
Re: Quicktionary
I bought the Quicktionary a few months back, and though it will have occasional “hiccups” (where it thinks it is some word completely different), on the whole it is a nice tool. My 9 year old son is the one who uses it; he has decent motor skills (though allow some practice time when you get it — at first your scan omits the first letter or last until you figure out how to do the scan correctly. Since it is a little pricey, I”m not brave enough to let my son take it to school where I think it could be of great value. Kathleen

Re: Quictionary - a tad overrated
Hi Sue-
Please keep in mind that some of the reviews for the Reading Pen you may have seen were for the first generation unit. The Reading Pen II introduced in December, 2000 is a significantly enchanced model with much faster recognition of words, speak the definition, scan an entire line, larger and smaller font capability, etc.
Let me know if you have any questions or would like to talk to some users.
Best regards,
Steve
I just put “quictionary” (no k) into www.google.com and got lots of links, including a couple of discussions that repeat what I’ve heard from folks who’ve tried it — it’s not ready for prime time yet, at least notfor LD folks, was the general opinion.
