state law in PA provides $500 to parents to hire a tutor

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

in the state of Pennsylvania, House Bill 996 passed this past spring, this bill entitles parents to a fee of $500 to hire a tutor for their child, it only applies to 3rd, 4th and 5th and 6 th grade testing given in school (eligibilty not specified in bill) and it is for reading or math,

the parent applies to school for consideration, the bill specifically states that entrance to the program be kept SIMPLE,

the parent then gets $500 to use for tutoring,

check your states laws, this bill info in PA was sent to superintendents, principals and administrators,

why it has not been sent to parents is a mystery, maybe it will later since it is a new law,

this tutoring is being paid by the state with a 23.6 million grant,

i have also had one of my parents fight so hard for her 2nd grade daughter that she got the $500 for her even though she is not in the specified grades,

we all know as tutors that the younger the child is the better, the kids to target are first and second graders, why wait,

but for anyone in PA, go to your principal and ask about this law and ask for it to made known to ALL parents in the school, libby

Libby,

Wow! I found this post kind of by accident but sure am glad I did. I had my 9 yr. old son in sped class tutored last summer and this summer. It really helped him it seems the tutors are able to keep his interest better and also give him more challenge.

I keep asking for some inclusion but the answer is always he can’t read well enough. He is at below 2nd according to school. I just had a re-evaluation done. He is smart and I believe his reading level is directly related to the material.

Anyway since I live in Pa I will definately go for this to enable me to keep up the tutoring.

Thanks so much.

If you call your State Representative’s office they will send you a copy of the bill. I ordered it today she said it is 33 pgs. but they can also send you a summary that is easier reading.

Let’s all Pa parents go for it after all our taxes are paying for it.

This is great news!
To Libby, Marion or anyone,
I will appreciate if you post the name of the law
Do we have to apply to the school district or to the state?

Thank you!

marion,

go for it marion, remember, the publication that i got about the law was for administrators only, so push for it, the law makes it clear that application for this money should be kept simple, go to your principal first and if no luck, go to the spec ed supervisor,

remember, administrators are not going to advertise it, makes their school look bad,

and if at all possible marion, find a Phono-Graphix tutor, a good PG tutor finishes the program in 12 sessions or less, a good bargain, if you are going to your tutor for two summers, find another tutor,

good luck, if you have any trouble post again with an email address and i will send you the actual memo,

i give it to all my clients,

HELP!!! I am in Alabama, and would like to find out more information on this bill, and how it got passed. My son is dyslexic and I would love to have him tutored. The only problem is that our insurance does not cover this type of learning disability. I would love to get our state motivated for Learning disability children. It would be a god send.

Thanks
