reading tutor

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

My third grader (boy) was diagnosed as dyslexic at the end of second grade. He can read and can comprehend fairly well but needs cuing for retrieval and his written expression is significantly inferior to his oral expression. His classroon teacher has been very accomodating to him, disregarding poor spelling, grammer, etc. when grading for content but this isn’t particularily helpful in helping him learn proper written expression of his thoughts and ideas. We have him with a private tutor (through an agency) but she has no specific training in working with dyslexics, nor does anyone the agency currently has. We were told to find a reading specialist for him but I have been unsuccessful so far. Does anyone know of such an individual in the Fort Myers, Fl. area?
We are on Sanibel Island in the southwest part of the state. Thanks.

I may have my distances off but in Sarasota there is a clinic called The Thinking Center. I went there for some training for my son. I was very impressed with everyone I met. They have a number of different types of programs. Perhaps if it is too far, they might be able to help you find someone. They have a very helpful website, that you might start with.
