trouble with sequencing

Your son may be having difficulty with comprehension. Maybe, he rememembers the words from the story because they are similar to those on the sentence stripsmso it is easy for him to place them in the right order. However, he may have difficulty interpreting pictures. You may need to expose him to chats/discussions about pictures before he reads the text.

It sounds as if he is not visualizing the story, and so remembers only the words. Visualization is important to comprehension. You may want to work with him using Lindamood Bell’s book on Verbalizing and Visualizing, or Mindprime’s IdeaChain. Both teach a child how to visualize stories they read or hear.

How old is your son? How are his basic reading skills? General language skills?

My son has had the same problem and they have tried all sorts of things. It is definetly a comprehension problem. The only thing that seemed to help at all was the Lindamood Bell Visualizing and verbalizing.

Write sentences or words under the pictures and him read the sentences or words out loud. May be your child is and auditory learner, rather that visual. Sometimes just verbalizing what is seen in the picture may help, if he verbalizes outloud
