new high school LD teacher

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hello! I have been a LD tutor at the elementary level for the past three years. This year I was placed in an LD classroom at the high school level. How should I start my year off?? How should I set up my room?? I am worried that I will do it all wrong!

Do you teach any classes, have inclusion, content mastery, or a mixture? Do you know what kind of paperwork you will be required to do? Each state/school is different. Are you in charge of notifying teachers of your students’ modifications? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you need to find out very soon. No matter what, I would send out a letter to the students and parents to introduce yourself. It is better to get to know the parents in a positive way, because you may have to deal with negative stuff later. (let the school pay postage) What you need to do depends on your answers to these questions.
Write back, and help will be on the way.
Good luck!

Ditto to AmyG’s response! The first few days of school can also be well spent getting to know your students well. There is a wealth of first day activities that can help you get to know your students skills and personalities in a fun way. Try education-world. com or kathy schrock’s guide for educators for ideas. It’s good to develop a short profile of your students to share with others who will work with them. High schoolers are definitely different, enjoy the experience and let us know how you are doing :)
