Multi-Sensory for Teen? (help...)

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I’m looking for ways to teach parts of speech in a multi sensory way. He needs something besides ditto sheets to make it stick and to help him understand.

He is 17 with Aspergers / Dyslexia. We are home schooling 1/2 days this year and are using the PASS Program curriculum from the school. We’re doing Pornouns now and he doesn’t get it.

I’m hitting a brick wall and can’t come up with multi sensory techniques for this!

aahhh!
Anyone have any ideas that I can add (to this boring unit) on alternative strategies that might use different colors to help him process - or –-gosh! I’m drawing a blank….any advice is WELCOME!

Hi Lori,

What about??? http://www:writingexpress.net

Where I worked we used this program, Strengthening Students Writing Through Focus, by Dr. William Spivey… to help kids learn how to write. It doesn’t use all the technical terms about writing and instead of verbs they are called action words and nouns are who/whats… It really helps the writing come alive. He also has lots of card game ideas etc.and you can e-mail or call him and he will help you with your problems.

Lingui Systems has some speech and langauge games that you can look into as well and this website by an SLP, Tracy Boyd has some interactive games on it that he might enjoy.

In addition to Pattim’s suggestions, you might look at “Framing Your Thoughts” from Project Read. It is multisensory and manipulative without being insulting. I don’t have the website handy but I will look.

HI LORI: Have you read “The Gift of Dyslexia” by Ron Davis with Eldon Braun (website www.dyslexia.com)? Ron Davis is a successfully “corrected” autistic/dyslexic…his work with clay, in which you mold the letter symbols in clay AND then the learner chooses a “picture” which he/she models in clay to “link” to the symbols (word) is unique and might help. After all, if it worked for Ron — and these methods were developed through his LIFE of experience, perhaps it will work for your learner. Good luck!

My daughter was taught with the Written Expression Strand of Project Read — it’s a multisensory writing program that teachers sentence structure, parts of speech, punctuation, etc. She benefited greatly from this.
