Getting Into Graduate School

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

:D I have a B.A. Degree from Columbia College in Columbia, MO.
I had a cumluative G.PA. of 2.65 the Graduate School I want to attend is
Dominican University which requires a 3.0 G.P.A. from a four-year program. I have been taking classes at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. where I have even gotten Academic Honors for one Quarter last Winter of 2003. If I do not have the 3.0 then I have to take a Graduate Test the Miller Analogies Test but I think the standard should be lowered
if you have a learning disability and maybe get a waiver from some state education agency in Illinois that says I do not need to take that test.

I have documentation of my disability from tests I took at Harper College back in 1986. Where do I turn?

I feel your post. I am a junior at Unviersity and this time next summer, I am going to start studying for the GRE and work from the mathematics part through the rest of it and then the subject test for my major. So, I more than feel you. I have been doing remedial mathematics since August to accomplish part of that goal.

The Millers Analogy Test is very much old school. Call the school you would like to do graduate work at and ask them if they accept the GRE as well as the seperate subject test for the GRE that pertains to your major or concentration. If you more than have to take the Millers Test, then find a class that teaches it STAT! and sit through the class a few times over if you have to. And be sure to get modern books on it also, but that is, once again, a very old school test. There is nothing on it at my university bookstore even. But, I live in the south so it is different here.

If you have ld testing that is hella old, then you have to get re tested for everything (depending on you ld and whatnot). If you live in Chicago, you should have no trouble finding some place to help you, you are in a very modern area of the US and should thank goodness for that. Illinois even, that is a modern area of this country. Unlike certain southern states I could name (TENNESSEE). I would call the Unviersity and ask them how much weight they will put on your millers test or your gre. For example, if you are a lit major (like myself) most grad schools could nto give a flying flip about what all score you obtained on teh math portion of the gre, if you do well you get your name in the pot for graduate assitantships earlier tham most and that is about it.

My piss poor typing non withstanding, Ipersonally have never heard of any University waivering the GRE and I figure that would go for the milelrs as well. That is like waivering the SAT or something, you know? But, you call around, get retested (you might be able to do that at the school you are at now) then call the school you wish to attend for grad school and find out what test they really and truly want for you to be admitted into the whatever garduate program, thenstart studying for that particular test the GRE will let an ld student take it, you just have to sign up earlier than most…when you get retested, make sure the university you wish to attend knows of your situation, there is no shame in that. But, if you try to get out of that test, they might not like it; depending on your major, you might make a portfolio along with your test scores and bring up your ld in your personal statement and all of that.

:( TO take new ld testing where I took it back in 1986 would cost $300.00 and I do not have that kind of money available to re-taking it.
I did contact the Illinois Department of Education regarding the situation and waiting to here back from them.

Thanks for your advice and good luck to you.
