help finishing college

Hello. I read your message and I sympatheize with you. I am 34 and have been to 4 colleges. I do have an AA degree(only got it by cheating, which I’m not proud of). I have been to a 4 year school as well, flunked out becuase it was just to much with my ADD/LD. I just recently Monday, didn’t finish my first semester in a AA degree vocational program. I had three classes and passed two of them(you have to at least get a C in each class in the program) but didn’t pass the other class(missed a C by 10 points). VERY frustrating! I have such a hard time remembering iformation! it sucks big time!

I’m not sure what type of advice I can offer you. I am looking for some advice as well. I’m not working and it really sucks, especially around the holidays without any cash. I have a very supportive girlfriend(she is a Social Worker) so I’m lucky in that aspect.

As college is so expensive these days, I’d suggest making an appointment with a counselor at your nearest state college. Take your transcripts from the other colleges with you. Ask them how many of your courses from other colleges they’d give you credit for and ask them to plan out what further courses you’d need to get a degree. What subject do you think is easiest for you? Make that your major.

You can always check for colleges specific to educating people with learning disabilities but some of them are quite expensive. Their names can be found in the K&W Guide to Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities and that guide can be found in any good bookstore or public library.

one thing I noticed for myself is that I benefited from picking a major which had smaller class sizes. If I had a class of over 20 people usually I was lost and not motivated to do well. I would take the advice to talk to a counselor and see what the options are. I would just really look at the class sizes and teaching styles. Are you medicated at all? I found that when I became medicated it made a world of difference … sooooo much better for school attention and organization…. oh an of course ACTUALLY finishing assignments on time!! Hope this helps!!

P.S. - I also just finished a MS degree in Education … I don’t think any of my k-12 teachers or undergrad teachers thought I’d ever get this far …. TRUST me, if I can do it.. then you can too!!! :) GOOD LUCK!!
